Dr. Turner enjoyed a long and distinguished medical career in gynecologic oncology for 35 years before retiring. Throughout her successful tenure, she served as the associate medical director at Planned Parenthood of North Central States between 2016 and 2022. She was also affiliated with Genesis Medical Center in Davenport, Iowa, and Mercy Cancer Center (MercyOne) in Mason City, Iowa. Furthermore, Dr. Turner taught medical courses to students and residents at the University of Nebraska, the University of Iowa, and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
During her medical career, Dr. Turner returned to college to acquire a law degree. Her goal was to understand how policy affects education and medicine. Dr. Turner also believed that a legal background would be helpful as an Iowa Board of Regents member.
Heavily involved in charitable work, Dr. Turner has been engaged with a nonprofit group called Outreach, through which she traveled on 12 medical missions to Tanzania between 2010 and 2019. She has also volunteered with the Children's Feeding Centers for Outreach. Dr. Turner is presently a member of Rotary International, has been involved with Singida's Medical Center, and has chaired the board of trustees for the League of Women Voters Education Fund.

Highly educated, Dr. Turner earned a Bachelor of Science in distributed studies (zoology, chemistry, and psychology) at Iowa State University, followed by a Doctor of Medicine and residency in obstetrics-gynecology at the University of Iowa and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Moreover, Dr. Turner acquired a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Drake University in 2007. She is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist through the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology Inc.
To remain aware of developments in her field, Dr. Turner is active as a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology Inc.
For her professional and civic contributions, Dr. Turner received a Certificate of Compassionate Care from the Schwartz Center, a Gertrude Rush Award from the National Bar Association, and a Louise Noun Visionary Woman of the Year Award from the Young Women's Resource Center of Des Moines. She has also been inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame and featured in Fortune Magazine and The Wall Street Journal.
