Dr. Stavropoulos has contributed more than 100 peer-reviewed publications chapters and textbooks including publications in Digestive Endoscopy, Endoscopy and Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

MIRAMAR, FL, May 23, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Stavros Stavropoulos has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

In his youth, Dr. Stavropoulos's imagination was captured by Aristotle Onassis's career and larger-than-life persona and he was intent on a career in business. However, after reading Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis, gifted to him by his father on his 11th birthday, the novel's depiction of an idealistic doctor inspired him to pursue a career in medicine instead. After earning a Bachelor of Science in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University, he expanded upon his professional knowledge, earning an MD from Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and completing internships and residencies in gastroenterology, as well as a fellowship in advanced endoscopy at New York Presbyterian and Columbia University.

During the early stages of his career, Dr. Stavropoulos gained valuable expertise in the field as advanced endoscopist at New-York Presbyterian-Columbia and as director of endoscopy and the director of the advanced endoscopy program at Winthrop University Hospital. He excelled as the director of endoscopic ultrasound and therapeutic endoscopy for NYP Columbia, an associate professor at New York University, an adjunct clinical professor of medicine for Temple University and Columbia University, and as chief of endoscopy and director of the Program in Advanced Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at NYU Langone Health-Long Island.

Dr. Stavropoulos is an expert in EUS and ERCP but has gained international recognition for his pioneering work in POEM, a revolutionary advance in the treatment of achalasia (an esophageal swallowing disorder). Dr. Stavropoulos was the 2nd operator in the world (first in the Western Hemisphere) to perform POEM in 2009, just months after the 1st human POEM in Japan by thoracic surgeon Haruhiro Inoue. Dr. Stavropoulos is the highest volume POEM operator in the US, has published the largest and most comprehensive single-center Western POEM series to date and led the effort culminating in the POEM white paper, a collaborative effort of the two main endoscopy societies in the US, SAGES and ASGE. Dr. Stavropoulos has also been a pioneer in ESD (first US cases in 2005 with recent publication of the largest Western single-center ESD series) and EFTR/STER, techniques that allow the complete curative removal of cancers and other tumors of the GI tract without the need for surgery. As a leading global expert in these Endoscopic Surgery ( also known as "3rd space") novel and challenging techniques, Dr. Stavropoulos is invited widely in the US and abroad to lecture, provide instruction and perform live demonstrations. Furthermore, in 2008 he founded a live endoscopy course (Long Island Live), which during its 13 years explored the frontiers of Endoscopic Surgery and became the pre-eminent live course in this field. Dr. Stavropoulos is a fellow of the ASGE and AGA, member of SAGES and one of a small number of international endoscopists honored with fellowship to the Japanese Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FJGES), one of the oldest and most revered endoscopy societies in the world.

Dr. Stavropoulos presently serves as the chief of endoscopy and director of the program in advanced gastrointestinal endoscopy and endoscopic surgery at Archbold Medical Center where he performs the cutting edge endoscopic surgery procedures that he has pioneered, including ESD, POEM and EFTR, and offers training in these procedures as part of an advanced fellowship program. Dr. Stavropoulos has been honored with fellowship in the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, and the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

Dr. Stavropoulos has contributed more than 100 peer-reviewed publications chapters and textbooks including publications in Digestive Endoscopy, Endoscopy and Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. In light of his professional achievements, he was named a Top Doctor by New York Magazine and Castle Connolly, and received an honorary fellowship through the Japanese Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in being able to introduce POEM in the United States in 2009 to the great benefit of achalasia patients. His pioneering efforts in POEM paved the way for gastroenterologists to perform POEM alongside surgeons. Within the coming years, Dr. Stavropoulos is looking forward to the continued growth and success of his career.
