From 2003 to 2005, he served as chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine at St. Peter's HealthCare System, and he is counted among the earliest hospitalists, practicing through the program at St. Peter's that he helped initiate. In 2005, he advanced to the role of hospitalist and assistant clinical professor at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was also a proud co-founder and an assistant clinical professor for the Quinnipiac University Frank H. Netter, MD, School of Medicine/St. Vincent's Medical Center, which established a clinically integrated network. Notably, Dr. Varbaro subsequently led the team that installed rotation protocols for the institution's third-year medical students.
Between 2012 and 2015, Dr. Varbaro skillfully served as the medical director of Hospital Medicine at St. Vincent's Health Service. He then progressed to the role of chief medical officer for Jackson North Medical Center from 2015 to 2017 where he was credited with initiating distinct, innovative patient care protocols by installing improved quality metrics and streamlined operational systems. He manages concurrent affiliations, which enable Dr. Varbaro to extend his reach and apply his distinguished skillset; for example, he has offered invaluable expertise as an independent consultant with Chartis Clinical Quality Solutions since 2017, and he exercises his passion for teaching and mentoring through his role as an assistant professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, where he has been on faculty since 2018. Additionally, Dr. Varbaro is the chief medical advisor and medical director for public health programs for Bergen County, where he has excelled since 2021.
Board-certified in internal medicine, Dr. Varbaro proudly persists in treating patients as a practicing physician in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He relies on outstanding academic training and credentials, including an MD from the New York University School of Medicine. He also completed a residency in internal medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Rutgers University, and earned a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in leadership in healthcare from Yale School of Management. Additionally, Dr. Varbaro finished a Bachelor of Science in cell and molecular biology from Brown University, where he was gratified to graduate magna cum laude.
Numerous accolades have been bestowed upon Dr. Varbaro for his commitment to patients and colleagues, including being named Physician of the Year and a HealthCare Hero by NJBIZ in 2022 after showing unwavering effort to address existing healthcare disparities rooted in race, gender and financial circumstances. He also accepted a special Congressional Recognition Award from the United States House of Representatives, which designated him a 2020 Coronavirus Hometown Hero for New Jersey District 5 in recognition of his stellar COVID-19 response efforts. Finally, Dr. Varbaro is proud that under his clinical leadership, the Lown Institute ranked the Bergen New Bridge Medical Center first in the state and second in the nation for the exceptional impact the facility has had on the community.
The first of his family to become a physician, Dr. Varbaro credits his parents' assistance in providing him with rich opportunities for academic and professional advancement. He also remains grateful for what the field of medicine has offered in terms of ways to support his community, state and beyond as he continually dedicates effort to improving care levels and circumstances for patients through his sustained membership on the board of trustees of the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative.
