Leveraging more than three decades of excellence in materials science and engineering, Dr. Zhang has earned distinction as a Principal Diamond Scientist for China Petroleum Corporation USA (CNPC USA), primarily for super-hard materials research in oil & gas application.
Prior to this assignment, he had worked at Sandvik and Diamond Innovations/GE Superabrasives for over 13 years as a R&D Specialist focusing on new product developments in diamond related tool manufacturing, and at Apex Tool Group for three years as a group materials advisor, leading frontier exploration of advanced materials research and materials processing technology. He managed 20+ NPI projects and contributed to the tool industry with 14 innovative cutting tool products that service in oil & gas drilling, aerospace/automation machining/grinding, electronic LED lapping/dicing and hands/power tool applications.
He published 70 patent applications in the super-hard and tool industry with 29 patents granted and 5 traded secrets. He also contributed 50+ peer-reviewed research publications and 20 international conference proceedings with over 10 invited presentations. He was recognized as a distinguished contributor elected for Sandvik R&D Day in 2015. Moreover, in 2021 and 2022, his research achievement in super-hard materials was awarded as #1 and #2 at CNPC.
Prior to industry, he was a research professor and PI of nanocrystalline materials at MSE, Northwestern University. He also contributed to the materials research society as a peer reviewer for several key journals.
In his early research career, he was remarkably influenced by his mentor, professor Julia Weertman at Northwestern University, and dedicated to materials research as his lifelong hobby.
Prior to immigrating to the USA, Dr. Zhang began his career as a staff scientist and materials characterization laboratory manager at the Institute of Metal Research at the Chinese Academy of Science in 1991.
As an evangelical Christian, Dr. Zhang is also devoted to bible studies and volunteering in society.
