WILMINGTON, DE, May 24, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joshua W. Martin III has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing on nearly 50 years of experience in the legal field, Judge Martin is recognized as senior counsel of Potter Anderson & Corroon LLP, the oldest Delaware law firm and one ofthe 10 oldest continuously practicing law firms in the United States. Since joining the firm in 2005, he has concentrated his practice on mediation and arbitration and on business counseling, particularly in telecommunications, public utilities and governmental relations, and he has been instrumental in organizing the Multicultural Judges and Lawyers Section. Ofhis many professional achievements, Judge Martin is especially proud of becoming the first person of color to serve as judge on the Delaware Superior Court in 1982. A person of great focus and determination, he attributes his success to his parents, who provided strong guidance and never allowed him to make excuses about what he wished to accomplish in life.

Previously, Judge Martin served as president and chief executive officer of Verizon Delaware Inc. from 1996 to 2005, which was previously Bell Atlantic Delaware Inc. He joined Verizon's predecessor, Bell Atlantic, in 1990 as its vice president, general counsel and secretary. He served on the Delaware Public Service Commission from 1978 to 1982, with three years as Chairman and practiced law for Hercules, Inc., from 1974 to 1982.

Judge Martin's performance in the field was born of his academic journey. He studied physics as an undergraduate at Case Western Reserve University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1966. During his studies there, his academic advisor suggested that science and technology might not be the best career fit for him and recommended that he consider law. After spending eight years working in research and development at DuPont, Judge Martin decided to pursue a law degree. He went on to earn a J.D. from Rutgers Law School in 1974 and began practicing patent law at Hercules Inc., in Wilmington, Delaware.

Long dedicated to civic advocacy, Judge Martin is life trustee of Goldey Beacom College, director of Southwest Power Pool, Inc., former trustee of the Winterthur Museum, and trustee and former director of Christiana Care Health System. He served as a special master for complex civil cases in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware and served on the Disciplinary Panel of the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware and the Vestry of the Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew.

Well regarded for his contributions to the field, Judge Martin has been named the Best Lawyers "Lawyer of the Year" for Mediation in Wilmington (2019, 2021 and 2023) and for Arbitration in Wilmington (2013 and 2017), and he has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America in the areas of mediation, arbitration and corporate law. Furthermore, he has been named fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators and the American Bar Foundation.

Judge Martin has passed the bar exam for the state of Delaware and the State of New Jersey. He is licensed in the U.S. District Court for the Districts of Delaware and New Jersey, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is certified in commercial law arbitration. As a commitment to his profession, he is a member of the Panel of Arbitrators and Mediators of the American Arbitration Association, the Panel of Distinguished Neutrals of the International Institute of Conflict Prevention & Resolution. He is a former president of the Delaware State Bar Association.

Judge Martin and his wife, Cynthia Primo Martin, have three children, Heather Mitchell, Alexis Martin and the late Victoria Martin, and two grandchildren, Alex Buonfiglio and Carter Mitchell. Ms. Primo Martin is a leader in the Delaware nonprofit world; her organization has placed more than 500 people of color on boards of directors. Her recent book is Handbook for Nonprofit Leadership: Recruiting, Training and Engaging Trustees of Color. In Judge Martin's free time, he enjoys golf, music and audio video reproduction.
