Since 2012, she has focused her efforts on the global regulatory landscape of probiotics specifically, working to establish appropriate safety requirements for microbial species, ensuring compliance in manufacturing, and translating clinical science into consumer-friendly health benefits for food products and dietary supplements. For more than a decade, she has played a strategic role within the DuPont (now IFF) probiotic business, engaged in innovation and product development as the global regulatory representative and as the liaison between business and regional regulatory teams, corresponding proactively with her colleagues internationally and adapting strategies for the existing and new products as regulations change. She has also played a role in the global advocacy of probiotics as a category of dietary ingredients, visiting with regulatory agencies in numerous countries around the world to build probiotic-focused regulations. Additionally, she is a valued member of the International Food Additives Council (IFAC), the Natural Products Association (NPA) and the International Probiotics Association (IPA), where she currently serves as President. In 2021, Dr. Smith expanded her regulatory focus to include additional ingredients used in dietary supplements, such as fibers and botanical extracts, as the Global Regulatory Strategy Lead for IFF Health.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Smith began her career focused on molecular diagnostics with the Division of Laboratories of the Louisiana Office of Public Health in 1999 and then the Florida Department of Health's Bureau of Laboratories in 2001. In the world of public health, Dr. Smith developed and instituted rapid methods of detection and typing for a number of pathogenic microbes and even a few viruses of public health concern. In 2003, she continued her focus on molecular diagnostics within the world of food safety and began a career with DuPont Qualicon where she partnered with food companies and regulatory agencies to implement food safety testing using rapid, genetic methods of detection and typing.
Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Smith is proud to have received a Homer Venture Award for Outstanding Service in the early years of her public health career as well as a McCluskey Award for Outstanding Research from Louisiana State University. She also received a Brown Foundation Research Excellence Award, a Morals and Ethics Award and a Technical Excellence and Value Creation Award from DuPont Nutrition and Biosciences.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Smith earned a bachelor's degree in 1993 and a Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology in 1997, both from Louisiana State University. Within the coming years, she intends to continue to thrive in the regulatory space, potentially creating avenues for regulators to understand the power of the microbiome on a deeper level.
