Mr. DeFouw has led a diversified engineering and manufacturing management career of over 50 years. Presently serving as the president of BPM, Inc., he has also found success as the President of Alofs Mfg. Co., Excellence Mfg., Inc. and Excellent Industries, Inc. Mr. DeFouw's distinguished tenure has led to various leading positions and expertise in engineering, management, and sales. He has also successfully owned and operated over a dozen companies throughout his career, including Revtec, Inc. as part owner, and chief operating officer.
Gravitating toward engineering while coming of age, Mr. DeFouw's interest in all things mechanical led him to study design and engineering in college. Mr. DeFouw studied at Ferris State University, earning Certificates in Jig & Fixture Design in 1962 and Die Design and an Associate of Science in Technical Drafting & Tool Design in 1963 and a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1964.
Upon graduation, he was hired by Ford Motor Company as a product engineer and subsequently promoted to senior engineer. While working at Ford, Mr. DeFouw received a Ford Fellowship from the Company and earned a BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. While a student he was elected president of the Engineering Student Council, was inducted into 'Triangles' - junior, 'Vulcans' – senior honor society, and Engineering College Honor Council and was awarded an 'Outstanding Leadership Award' from the College.
Mr. DeFouw's career earned him progressive management roles with Borroughs Corporation, Haworth, Inc., and Keeler Brass Company. In 1983, he was named vice president and general manager of a subsidiary of Benteler Corporation. He served as owner and president at Alofs Manufacturing Company in Grand Rapids, MI from 1985 to 1992.
Mr. DeFouw has acquired several U.S. patents in his field. As an expert in his field, he has also contributed several technical articles to trade magazines and testified before Senate and Congressional committees. In addition to his college degrees, Mr. DeFouw received credentials in manufacturing engineering. Recognizing his many years of accomplishments, he received an 'Outstanding Alumnus Award' from Ferris State University-College of Technology and later a 'Distinguished Alumnus Award' from the same University.
A leader in his community, Mr. DeFouw has been active as a member of Rotary International. Furthermore, Mr. DeFouw has been a member of the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce, the Western Michigan Technical Council, Grand Rapids Economic Club, and District Chairman of the Precision Metal Forming Association. As an extension of his commitments to the industry, Mr. DeFouw has been a member of several related organizations, including the Society of Automotive Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and as a senior member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. As an avid fly-fisherman, he also held officer roles with several fly-fishing clubs and was a life member of Trout Unlimited and Flyfishing International - national associations.
