NEW YORK, NY, June 01, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Rebecca M. Brown, MD, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in their field.

With more than five years of excellence in treating glioblastoma and neurofibromatosis, Dr. Brown has earned distinction as a neuro-oncologist at the Icahn School of Medicine in the Mount Sinai Health System. Since 2021, she has focused her efforts on conducting research while providing inpatient and outpatient care including the diagnosis and management of primary tumors of the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves, central nervous system (CNS) metastases of systemic cancers, neurologic sequelae of cancer therapy, and paraneoplastic disorders. Her areas of expertise are neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and schwannomatosis (SWN) including NF2, as well as glioblastomas, meningiomas, schwannomas, neurofibromas, and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors. She works diligently and collaboratively for each patient's case, engaging in meetings with other physicians and pharmaceutical companies to ensure that her patients are receiving the most optimal care regardless of barriers to availability of treatments. Dr. Brown is open to partnering with holistic care providers when this is important to the patient.

While at the Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Brown has established the adult Neurofibromatosis & Schwannomatosis Clinic of Mount Sinai (NSMS) and also provides expert care and clinical trial options to patients at her general neuro-oncology clinic. In line with her dedication to patient care, she personally provides genetic testing and counseling services for tumor predisposition syndromes affecting the CNS, resects cutaneous neurofibromas associated with NF1, and monitors tumor growth with whole body photography as well as dedicated imaging. Most recently, she co-authored and opened a phase I investigator-initiated trial into a new topical immunotherapy treatment for cutaneous neurofibromas in NF1, for which there is currently no available therapy. Well-qualified in her field, Dr. Brown is licensed to practice medicine in New York State and is certified in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and in Neuro-Oncology by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. She also is a medical marijuana certified prescriber with the Office of Cannabis Management of New York State.

Prior to her current role, Dr. Brown studied Biology and Neuroscience at Barnard College and The University of Chicago. Fluent in French, she worked as a special events intern with the New York International Youth Hostel in 1995 and as an international intern with Hosteling International Dublin in 1997. Following this time, she served as a special assistant to the sales director for Rapid Science Publishers London in 1998 and worked as a research aid for renowned economics author Meyer Weinberg in 1999. Dr. Brown contributed as a freelance writer with Macmillan References USA in 2000 and then completed her PhD dissertation in neuroendocrinology and toxicology at The Institute for Neuroscience at The University of Texas at Austin in 2007. She then served as postdoctoral fellow and program manager for the Center for Strategic and Innovative Technologies in 2007. After her post-doctoral fellowship, Dr. Brown matriculated in medicine at the UT Southwestern Medical Center in 2009 where she conducted basic research into the cell of origin of cutaneous neurofibromas. She completed her internal medicine internship at East Tennessee State University in 2013 and her neurology residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (NYC) in 2017. Dr. Brown completed fellowship in neuro-oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer in 2017, where she was awarded a T32 training award to help establish mouse xenografts of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) to better test drugs in a preclinical setting. She was promoted to instructor in 2019 and then joined Mount Sinai in January, 2021 in order to focus her clinical work on NF1 and SWN and switch from basic research to clinical trials.

Over the course of her career, Dr. Brown has received numerous honors in recognition of her stellar work, including but not limited to multiple NIH-funded training awards and acceptance as an NINDS-sponsored NeuroNEXT Fellow. She lends her unique expertise to the Society for Neuro-Oncology, the American Academy of Neurology, the American Neurological Association and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Within the coming years, Dr. Brown intends to develop and expand her neurofibromatosis clinic according to the following tenets, 1) addressing the concerns that matter the most to patients, 2) delivering state-of-the-art scientifically informed care, and 3) enhancing our understanding of glioblastoma, NF, and SWN, and related tumors in order to develop new effective treatments. She plans to further grow the NSMS clinic further to open more clinical trials and is working on a training/internship program that will open the doors for individuals from the community to learn about and take part in scientific research in order to demystify science and medical advancement for people everywhere.
