LITTLE ROCK, AR, June 02, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Puran S. Bora, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Leveraging more than three decades of excellence as a professor and researcher of age-related macular degeneration, Dr. Bora has earned distinction as a professor and director of the angiogenesis program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute. Since 2006, he has focused his efforts on conducting research as well as teaching residents, doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows on eye disorders, data collection and interpretation, and manuscript and grant writing. He also provides consulting services for pharmaceutical companies and is a valued member of the American Association of Immunologists and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

Prior to his current role, Dr. Bora began his career as an instructor with the Washington University School of Medicine in 1990 and was promoted to an assistant professor in 1992. Over the course of his career, he has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, including "Protective role of adiponectin against testicular impairment in high-fat diet/streptozotocin-induced type 2 diabetic mice" in 2020, "Role of thalidomide, senicapoc, and sodium butyrate in choroidal neovascularization" featured in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications in 2020 and "Role of adiponectin peptide1 (APNp1) on Age-related macular degeneration," which was published in the journal Biomolecules in 2022.

He has published several papers on FAEESynthase enzyme after purifying and biochemically characterizing the enzyme (Bora et.al., JBC, 1991). He is the first one to clone the enzyme, sequenced and characterized. They were the first one in his laboratory to show the detailed role of complement proteins in choroidal neovascularization (CNV) model or wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) model (Bora et.al. JI, 2005). They developed a polyethylene glycol (PEG) induced model of AMD both wet AMD and dry AMD (Lyzogubov et.al. JBC 2011, 2014). They also developed Adiponectin pedtide1 (APNp1) in his laboratory and have published several papers on its effect mainly on CNV and retina. APN1 is an anti-inflammatory peptide and also inhibits dry AMD. APN1 is unique because it was synthesized from the globular (functional) region of this protein (Adiponectin) APN1(Bora et.al., 2007) not only inhibits CNV and dry AMD but also inhibits RPE cells.

Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Bora received the Bishop's Medal in high school for scoring the highest marks on the High School Board Exams. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in chemistry and zoology in 1977 and a master's degree in biology, in 1979, both from Kumaun University in India. Following these achievements, he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry from the Kumaun University/All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, in 1984 and completed postdoctoral training in biochemistry and molecular biology at the Washington University School of Medicine in 1990. Within the coming years, Dr. Bora intends to continue consulting for pharmaceutical companies and assisting universities to create new medicine or drugs for individuals dealing with macular degeneration.

His role models are Albert Einstein and Mohan Das Gandhi.
