Raymond Merriman Recognized by Marquis Who's Who

Raymond Merriman serves as an expert in industrial and occupational hygiene



To commemorate his accomplishments, Mr. Merriman has received the Duke of Edinburgh Gold and Bronze Awards from Prince Philip.

    VICTORIA, BC, June 05, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Raymond Merriman has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing on more than four decades of expertise, Mr. Merriman specializes in industrial and occupational hygiene. As of 2017, he has been providing his expertise as President and senior occupational hygienist of Merriman & Associates Occupational Hygiene and Safety Consultants Ltd. During the interval from 2018 to 2020, he was also active as the senior occupational hygienist of Island Environmental Health and Safety and as an occupational hygiene advisor for the Interior Health Authority. Before these roles he had an extensive and challenging career at the Workers Compensation Board of British Columbia (WorkSafeBC). In his career-related endeavors, Mr. Merriman co-authored with Dr. Don Krawciw "Mercury in your Workplace" in the British Columbia Medical Journal in July 2005.

Mr. Merriman commenced his exposure to workplace hazards while still in school by providing safe passage to students as a School Patroller, then working part-time as a labourer producing lead fishing weights. His part-time work continued as a field technician collecting traffic corridor usage data and as an office assistant for the Province of British Columbia Department of Highways from 1972 to 1976. After receiving a Baccalaureate in Chemistry from the University of Victoria, he was active as a research and development chemist at AECL's Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment from 1976 until 1979. Between 1979 and 1984, he garnered expertise as a senior chemist at Sheppard T. Powell Associates LLC, which became known as Monenco Analytical Laboratories. From 1984 to 1985, Mr. Merriman, a Montreal Engineering Company (Monenco) representative, developed laboratory facilities and trained the Indonesian supervisors and laboratory personnel as part of a CIDA-funded Canada/Indonesia flood control project involving the Solo River on Java, Indonesia. Returning to Canada, he contributed to the Occupational Hygiene consulting divisions of Monenco Analytical Laboratories (Calgary), Monenco Maritimes Limited (Halifax), and Monenco Consultants Limited (Vancouver) as a senior occupational hygienist and general manager from 1985 until 1989. Between 1989 and 2018, Mr. Merriman built a prolific career as an occupational hygiene officer, senior regional officer, and federal WHMIS inspector at WorkSafeBC.

Before starting his professional journey, Mr. Merriman studied at the University of Victoria, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1976. He continued his academic efforts at Newcastle University, earning a Master of Science in occupational hygiene in 1988. As a commitment to his field, he has been certified as an industrial hygienist and an asbestos building inspector. Additionally, he has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists, the American Industrial Hygiene Association, and the British Occupational Hygiene Society, among others. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Mr. Merriman is a member of the Knights of Columbus, volunteers with Stella Maris Victoria, a ministry of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Victoria that ministers to seafarers, was a steering committee member of the Occupational and Environmental Health Certificate Program at the University of Victoria from 2003 to 2017, and a volunteer scientist from 1991 to 2017 with the Scientists and Innovators in Schools program which is intended to foster interest in the sciences.

To commemorate his accomplishments, Mr. Merriman has received the Duke of Edinburgh Gold and Bronze Awards from Prince Philip and was recognized for his outstanding professional contributions to the organization by the American Industrial Hygiene Association (BC-Yukon Local Section), where he served as President from 1993-1994. Among his many vocational achievements, he is most proud to have discovered the compounds and chemical pyrolysis processes that can lead to workers developing chemical pneumonitis due to glycol-based smoke generators used in the entertainment and asbestos abatement industries. A close second was assisting with Monenco Analytical Laboratories' development of Western Canada's first commercial radionuclide laboratory, which was instrumental in quantifying the presence or absence of radionuclides in environmental samples before the development of uranium mining sites and following nuclear events, such as the Chornobyl (Chernobyl) Accident. Reflecting on a long career, he attributes much of his success to his childhood experiences, and leadership responsibilities developed as a Queen Scout, as well as his self-reliance, innate leadership skills, and ability to fix anything. Looking toward the future, Mr. Merriman aspires to travel between Indonesia and Canada with his wife to mentor and support the education of their relatives in Indonesia.
