Over the course of his career, besides saving lives in the Intensive Care Unit, Dr. Hazra has taken up basic science research on a vitally important problem which affects the developing lungs of extremely preterm infants. This deadly disease annually affects tens of thousands of infants in the country as well as worldwide. His pioneering work that may lead to development of new therapeutics to this deadly disease called chronic lung disease, soon drew the attention of the scientific community both nationally and internationally and he was selected to present his own work at the prestigious Japan Pediatric Society in 2022 and the Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting in the USA in 2021. In recognition of his novel research work, Dr. Hazra was honored with a prestigious David G. Nathan National Award in Basic Research by the Society for Pediatric Research in 2021. As a principle investigator, Dr. Hazra's research findings are now published in high impact journals such as the Scientific Report from the Nature group in 2022 and the Journal of Clinical Investigation insight in 2023. Among his other professional accomplishments, he was inducted as a fellow to the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2022. He also won a Best Poster Award from the Virtual Regional Research Conference in 2020.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Hazra earned a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Calcutta Medical College of the University of Calcutta in India in 2003. Following this achievement, he attained a diploma in child health from the Chittaranjan Seva Sadan and Sishu Sadan Hospital in West Bengal, India in 2005 and a Doctor of Medicine in pediatrics from the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Odisha, India in 2008. Dr. Hazra then completed a senior residency program in pediatrics at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Chandigarh, India in 2012 and joined as clinical neonatology fellow at the prestigious John Radcliffe Hospital of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom in 2012. In 2015, he joined a pediatric residency program at the Brookdale University Medical Center and completed a neonatology fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), one of the top programs in neonatal-perinatal medicine in the USA in 2021. Extremely well-qualified in his field, Dr. Hazra is now double board-certified both in Pediatrics and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.
