Well regarded for his expertise in emergency medicine, Dr. Torbati lends more than 25 years of experience to his work at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he is the co-chair and medical director of the Cedars-Sinai Emergency Department and holds the Levin-Gordon Chair in Emergency Medicine in honor of Joel Geiderman MD. A board-certified physician in emergency medicine, Dr. Torbati has been a member of the Cedars-Sinai medical staff since 2001, where his responsibilities include ensuring the smooth operation of the Emergency department, treating patients, supervising medical students and residents, and supervising a research team on topics including long COVID, geriatric trauma and emergency models of care, and social determinants of health.

Dr. Torbati was drawn to the medical profession because of his desire to help people; he appreciates the unique opportunity that he possesses, as a physician, to impact lives. His academic journey began at the University of California Los Angeles, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in psychobiology in 1992. He went on to earn an M.D. from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine in 1996. He completed an emergency medicine transitional internship at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, now Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego, and a residency in emergency medicine from the University of California San Diego Medical Center. Prior to joining Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Dr. Torbati held positions with Baldwin Park Medical Center, University of California San Diego Medical Center, San Diego Central Jail and Mercy Air Medical Transport Service.

Well regarded for his contributions to the field, Dr. Torbati has earned numerous accolades throughout his career. Most recently, he has been named a Southern California Super Doctor, named as a Top Doctor by Los Angeles Magazine and Pasadena Magazine, presented with a Health Care 2022 Leadership Symposium and Award by the Los Angeles Business Journal, and honored with the Howard I. Wilner, MD, Alumnus of the Year Award by the Cedars-Sinai Alumni Association.

A prolific writer, Dr. Torbati's impressive range of research has been published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, Annals of Emergency Medicine, Journal of Emergency Medicine, Academic Emergency Medicine and the Journal of Trauma. He is editor and Emergency Cardiac Care section editor for the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine and editor of the Journal of Emergency Medicine, as well as a frequent lecturer at local, regional, and national levels.

As a commitment to his field, Dr Torbati is active with the Hospital Association of Southern California's Los Angeles Emergency Health Services Committee, the American National Red Cross Los Angeles Regional Board, and the American College of Emergency Physicians Clinical Policy and Federal Review Subcommittee. He is a senior examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine and serves on the American College of Emergency Physicians Quality and Patient Safety Committee. He is a fellow with both the American College of Emergency Physicians and American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Of his long list of professional achievements, Dr. Torbati is particularly proud of supporting and leading the growth of an incredibly high-functioning department at the second highest-ranked hospital in the country. In the coming years, he looks forward to expanding the Cedars-Sinai emergency department in size and function and building more programs and opportunities to serve as a safety net for the community; a special area of interest is creating technology opportunities and researching new discoveries for COVID, geriatrics, and racial determinants of health. On a personal level, Dr. Torbati is committed to remaining a good husband to his wife of 20 years, Gilda, and a good father to his children, Ashton, Gavin, Dean and Skye.
