Pamela Jo Howell Slutz Honored for Accomplishments in Diplomacy

Pamela Jo Howell Slutz is a retired diplomat and the President of The Mongolia Society



Her career culminated in two ambassadorships: to Mongolia (2003-2006) and to Burundi (2009-2012).

    KERRVILLE, TX, June 19, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Pamela Jo Howell Slutz has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Ms. Slutz is a retired United States ambassador, currently serving as the president of The Mongolia Society, a position she has held since 2019. Founded in 1961, The Mongolia Society is a private, non-profit, non-political organization that promotes the study of Mongolia in all its aspects. As president, Ms. Slutz is dedicated to building people-to-people and institutional relationships that advance the Society's mission and to creating broader awareness of its goals.

For more than 30 years, Ms. Slutz was a career (commissioned) U.S. Foreign Service officer (diplomat) with the U.S. Department of State, working in U.S. embassies abroad and in the Department in Washington. Her career culminated in two ambassadorships: to Mongolia (2003-2006) and to Burundi (2009-2012). Over the course of her career, she served at U.S. embassies and consulates in Indonesia, China (including Taiwan), the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Kenya; as well as a stint as a member of the U.S. Delegation to the Nuclear and Space Talks with the USSR in Geneva (1987-89). She was the recipient of several U.S. Department of State Superior Honors awards and the Presidential Rank Award of Meritorious Executive. Following her retirement from the U.S. Foreign Service in 2012, Ms. Slutz was named chair of the North America-Mongolia Business Council, where she served until 2016. The nonprofit Council advocated on behalf of U.S. and Canadian companies invested in Mongolia. In recognition of her contributions to promoting people-to-people and institutional relationships between the United States and Mongolia, in 2015, the President of Mongolia awarded Ms. Slutz the Order of the Polar Star, the highest state award given to a non-Mongolian citizen.

Ms. Slutz holds a Bachelor of Arts in politics from Hollins University and a Master's degree in Southeast Asian studies from the University of Hawaii, where she was an East-West Center Fellow. She credits her success to the influence of her father, a career U.S. Foreign Service officer, and to the curiosity and open-mindedness she developed while spending her childhood abroad. In her personal time, Ms. Slutz is an amateur genealogist and a passionate, competitive equestrian.
