A native of the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Gouveia Marks is the middle child of seven siblings born to parents who did not attend college but who were determined that their children would. Grounded by years of professional experience in higher education, which encompass instruction, educational leadership, and guiding traditional and adult learners, Dr. Gouveia Marks presently excels as the Accreditation Liaison Officer and Dean of the Division of Liberal and Fine Arts, and Business and Public Service at Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) in Branchburg, NJ. Since joining the institution in 2012, she has overseen operations of the College's educational programs; supervised articulation agreements with other educational institutions; ensured compliance with accrediting bodies; and mentored faculty and students. She initiated a mentoring program for the young women in RVCC's Educational Opportunity Fund program (EOF), pairing them with faculty and staff mentors who provided additional academic and career support.
Prior to RVCC, Dr. Gouveia Marks was the Director of the Manhattan campus of The College of New Rochelle from 2008 to 2012, working exclusively with adult learners who were employees of District Council 37, New York City's largest public employee union. During the early stages of her career, Dr. Gouveia Marks gained valuable expertise in the field of higher education as a faculty member at Research 1 institutions and Historically Black Colleges and Universities, among them Stanford University, The George Washington University, Morehouse College, and her alma mater, Howard University. She noticed educational inequities in the alarming gap between college-ready and underprepared students, the latter group comprised primarily of students of color. This was the principal factor that prompted her transition from the classroom to administration, as she was driven to help create educational policies and develop curriculum that are inclusive and equitable. As the Dean of Language Arts and the Learning Resource Center at Antelope Valley College in Los Angeles County, CA, she was appointed to both the district and statewide Hispanic Advisory Committees, communicating with leaders in the public and private sectors.
Before embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Gouveia Marks earned a bachelor's degree, master's degree and Ph.D. from Howard University. She stays abreast of trends in higher education by attending and presenting at conferences, as well as maintaining memberships in affinity groups and volunteering on advisory boards. She is committed to contributing to the community in which she lives and works, and demonstrates that civic duty through service, including a term on the Board of Trustees of United Way of Hunterdon County, NJ., during which she co-chaired its sub-committee on cultural competency and served on its Latino Coalition.
In recognition of her professional achievements, she has earned several awards, including an accolade for outstanding service from the Smithsonian Institute and the Giving Back Award for Administrators from the Insight into Diversity publication, the only national award that honors college and university administrators for their commitment to diversity through leadership, and for contributions to their campus and community.
Though her career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Gouveia Marks takes the greatest pride in remaining acutely sensitive to the needs of all students and creating safe environments in which they can thrive academically and personally. In 2003, while a faculty member at Clark Atlanta University, a grant proposal she submitted to the Fulbright Hays Group Projects Abroad program entitled, "Understanding and Managing Cultural Diversity through Improved Cross-Cultural Communication," was selected for funding. The following year, she led a group of forty undergraduates, graduate students and faculty on a five-week project trip to Costa Rica. With few exceptions, the undergraduate students were first-generation learners from underserved populations. Watching them grow and benefit from this experience provided Dr. Gouveia Marks with profound examples of the transformative power of education, underscored the impact of her work, and inspired her continued efforts.
Looking ahead, Dr. Gouveia Marks intends to focus on launching an adult college at Raritan Valley Community College and continuing to support the College's new director of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
