Mr. Tong has been capably supporting students as a licensed marriage and family therapist at California Crosspoint Academy where he also fulfills the vital roles of vice principal and teacher. His responsibilities have grown significantly since he started in 2016, initially as a therapist and teacher while the school was also half its current size. He gained valuable experience as a research assistant intern at Sangamo Biosciences Inc. between 2009 and 2010 before transitioning to the role of research assistant at Carol Gross Lab at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) between 2010 to 2013. At UCSF, he collaborated in creating two genome-scale deletion libraries for Bacillus subtilis, a gram-positive model organism which also earned him his first scientific journal publication. In response to his interest and aptitude in relational dynamics, Mr. Tong pursued his graduate degree in psychology and served as a trainee therapist with John F. Kennedy University's Oakland Community Counseling Center Oakland from 2015 to 2017. In his current position, Mr. Tong interacts directly with students to conduct interventions or to implement programs that assist them in managing both academic and personal stress, and he oversees the learning accommodations as well as the math and science division of the school.
Mr. Tong brings impressive academic credentials to his position, and after having earned a Bachelor of Arts in molecular and cell biology, with an emphasis on genetics, genomics and development at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2009, he was poised to contribute research findings in the field of genetics. Instead, he was drawn to understanding people and helping them meet life's challenges, and after further exploration of his passion, Mr. Tong pursued a degree in counseling psychology, earning a master's degree, with both MFT and LPCC designations, from John F. Kennedy University in 2016.
While in training as an associate marriage and family therapist in 2015, Mr. Tong worked with at-risk middle school youth and was proud to be a co-founder of the Welcome Room Program at Westlake Middle School, where he also served as the trainee therapist. Notably, he was recognized by the National University Symposium for the program installation, and in 2015, Mr. Tong was honored to receive the Health Resources and Services Administration Stipend from the U.S. Department of Human and Health Services.
Mr. Tong attributes his success thus far to God, his spouse's supportive partnership, familial sacrificial support, his professors and cohorts, and dedicated coworkers.
