Drawing on over three decades of expertise, Dr. Marcus specializes in environmental services and coastal restoration. Since 2021, he has found much success as a principal scientist and an environmental sciences group leader at TYLin. In this capacity, Dr. Marcus is responsible for freshwater and marine ecology, wetland restoration and enhancement, business development nationally and internationally, overseeing staff nationwide, managing large transportation projects, including roads, highways, bridges and ports while protecting natural habitats, obtaining coastal and wetland permitting, and preparing environmental assessments and impact statements.
Dr. Marcus initially began his vocation working as an environmental administrator at the Florida Department of Transportation from 1985 to 1987. Following this post, he excelled as an environmental director and the vice president of Consulting Engineering and Science Inc. from 1987 until 2010. Between 2010 and 2018, he garnered expertise as the vice president, principal and discipline leader at Stantec Consulting, formerly known as C3TS Inc. Subsequently, he was involved with Miller Legg as a regional environmental manager from 2019 to 2021. In his career-related endeavors, Dr. Marcus has authored several scholarly articles and taught at the University of Miami and at Florida International University.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Marcus pursued an education at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1975. He continued his academic efforts at Lancaster University, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in freshwater ecology in 1978. Subsequently, he completed his postdoctoral research studies at Florida International University in 1982. As a commitment to his field, he has been active with several industry-related associations, including the National Association of Environmental Professionals, the Florida Association of Environmental Professionals, the Freshwater Biological Association and the South Florida Association of Environmental Professionals, among others. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Dr. Marcus volunteers and donates funds to organizations dedicated to animal care and rescue.
Though his vocational journey has been filled with many memorable moments, Dr. Marcus is most proud to have led a significant number of impactful restoration projects on coral reefs, mangroves and seagrasses. Additionally, he is gratified to have been featured in TYLin's international newsletter for his professional accomplishments. Reflecting on his achievements, he attributes much of his success to his technical, marketing and interpersonal skills, as well as his daily pursuit of excellence and ability to seize every opportunity outside of his comfort zone. Looking toward the future, Dr. Marcus aspires to expand the scope of the company's environmental department both nationally and internationally and hopes to pursue an academic venture later in his career.
