Marquis Who's Who Selects John M. Whitney, PhD, for Distinguished Tenure in Synthetic Organic Chemistry

    NORWALK, CT, July 26, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John M. Whitney, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Whitney, an expert in synthetic organic chemistry, has been a principal research chemist at Vanderbilt Chemicals LLC, a global supplier of chemical products and services, in Norwalk, Connecticut, since 2022. Responsible for designing and developing specialty high-performance additives for lubricant applications at his manufacturing company, he draws on more than 30 years of experience and his lifelong passion for chemistry to achieve his goals.

Before joining his established manufacturing company, Dr. Whitney was employed by SI Group in Niskayuna, New York, a chemical manufacturing company based in The Woodlands, Texas, for over 15 years. Hired in 2005 as a lead chemist, he earned subsequent roles as a research and development manager, senior manager, and director of research and development. Dr. Whitney also spent nearly a decade at General Electric (GE) Global Research in Niskayuna from 1996 to 2005 as a chemist involved in monomer and polymer projects, extensive structure-property relationship studies, and other relative work. During an earlier stage of his career, he was an associate chemist at the U.S. Department of Energy in Berkeley, California, between 1989 and 1991, just before returning to college to pursue an advanced degree.

Throughout his extensive career as a researcher, Dr. Whitney has notably been responsible for commercializing several products while employed at the SI Group. His most recent was called the ELAZTOBOND™ B8-3410, a bio-renewable and resorcinol-free rubber-metal bonding resin, which solved a critical problem in the tire industry.

Involved in giving back to various civic and educational initiatives, Dr. Whitney was a volunteer webmaster for the Niskayuna Parent-Teacher Organization between 2006 and 2013. Looking toward the future, he aims to teach chemistry at a nearby community college. Dr. Whitney also hopes to inspire young minds to pursue STEM and become more interested in chemistry.

Dr. Whitney pursued an education at the University of California at Berkeley, graduating with a bachelor's degree in organic chemistry in 1990. Shortly thereafter, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in synthetic organic chemistry on the Irvine campus in 1996, during which time he served as a teaching assistant from 1991 to 1996. To remain aware of developments in his field, he has been an active member of the American Chemical Society since 1988.

Honoring his accomplishments, Dr. Whitney received a President's Award from SI Group and the Willis R. Whitney Award for Technical Achievement from GE.
