An experienced and tenured research chemist, Dr. Kool joined General Electric (GE) Superabrasives in Worthington, Ohio, in 1995 as a senior scientist before relocating to Niskayuna, New York, in 1999 to work at GE Global Research. Excelling in his field, he is engaged in hands-on research in the laboratory, serving as a project leader and principal investigator for multiple research projects, including precious metal recovery, photovoltaics, and high-temperature ceramics. Dr. Kool is also highly knowledgeable in inorganic, organic, and organometallic chemistry and advanced aerospace materials.
Before joining GE, Dr. Kool was an assistant professor in the chemistry department at Boston College from 1988 to 1995. In addition to teaching undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in general chemistry, advanced organic chemistry, and advanced inorganic and organometallic chemistry, he supervised approximately 15 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Kool garnered experience as a research chemist at KMS Fusion in Ann Arbor, Michigan, from 1976 to 1985 and as a consultant at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California, in 1984. Additionally, Dr. Kool taught several courses at Harvard University as a postdoctoral fellow.
Looking toward future success, Dr. Kool aims to continue providing his in-depth knowledge and expertise to solve complex problems. He also aims to deliver on his existing projects, including several grant proposals, and anticipates hearing back regarding a recently submitted proposal to the National Science Foundation for a project for producing sustainable aviation fuel using algae. Among his previous industry-related achievements, Dr. Kool notes the chemistries he developed to remove spent coatings from gas turbines and the hot gas path of gas turbines.
Dr. Kool attributes his success to his persistence and consistent invention productivity. As a seasoned scientist, he secured over 75 U.S. patents in his field. Dr. Kool has also disseminated his research by contributing to various scientific journals as an author and co-author.
Highly educated, Dr. Kool received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1974 and a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1987. He also studied at the Universitaet Bavreth in Germany between 1984 and 1986 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in chemistry at Harvard University from 1986 to 1988. Dr. Kool is active in his professional community as a member of the American Chemical Society.
