Erol Sancaktar, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Sancaktar is a professor emeritus at the University of Akron who retired from the school of polymer science and polymer engineering in 2020 after more than 20 years on campus.

Dr. Sancaktar is a professor emeritus at the University of Akron who retired from the school of polymer science and polymer engineering in 2020 after more than 20 years on campus. Emphasizing the significance of the experiential learning process, he taught undergraduate- and graduate-level courses to students in the department of mechanical engineering and the department of polymer engineering, and mentored 20 doctoral students.

During his academic career, Dr. Sancaktar also taught courses as an associate professor at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, for over a decade, was a visiting scholar at Kendall Company in Boston from 1985 to 1986, and was an instructor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, between 1977 and 1978.

Despite his retirement, Dr. Sancaktar continues to conduct research and publish scholarly articles in his field. He has also been an independent consultant and owner of Akron Material Concepts since 2005. He previously lent his time and expertise in over 15 other consulting assignments, sabbaticals, and extended visits with various government agencies, industrial organizations, foundations, and legal agencies, and served on 15 federal government review panels. Most notably, Dr. Sancaktar was involved in a substantial case providing expert witness testimony at the U.S. International Trade Commission in 2017, which amounted to more than $1 billion.

As a seasoned scholar, Dr. Sancaktar has contributed over 100 articles to scholarly journals related to mechanical, polymer, chemical, materials, electrical, structural, computational and manufacturing engineering as well as natural sciences including physics and chemistry, along with approximately 30 articles in books, and two chapters in "Handbook of Adhesion Technology" via Springer. He has also been active on several editorial boards in various capacities, has edited 25 books and special journal issues, and has been a reviewer for numerous scientific research proposals, journal articles, and books. Moreover, Dr. Sancaktar has organized 30 professional conferences and has presented at over 240 technical conferences. He holds four U.S. patents.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sancaktar and his colleagues acquired $4 million in grants to support his research from organizations such as the U.S. National Science Foundation, the U.S. Army, and the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration as well as the industry. He accumulated 56 projects between 1980 and 2022. Dr. Sancaktar's research activities have focused on adhesives/adhesion; polymers; composites; design and manufacture with novel materials; nanotechnology; elastomer/rubber/tire behavior and processing; excimer laser applications in polymers; design and manufacture of responsive membranes; electrically conductive adhesives; utilization of biomass and eco-friendly fillers in polymers for sustainable engineering.

Highly educated, Dr. Sancaktar graduated from Robert College in Istanbul with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1974. He subsequently studied at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, earning a Master of Science in mechanical engineering in 1975 and a Doctor of Philosophy in engineering mechanics in 1979. Remaining active in his industry, Dr. Sancaktar has been recognized as an elected fellow and chair of the technical committee on reliability stress analysis and failure prevention of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
