After 35 years of success in the classroom, Dr. Brechner retired and became recognized as a professor emeritus at the University of Florida in 2003. Having taught all levels of mathematics to undergraduate and graduate students, she also had four doctoral students graduate under her supervision. Passionate about the subject, Dr. Brechner excelled in geometric topology. When she was not busy teaching courses, she focused on conducting research and working on some of the most complex mathematical problems. As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Brechner disseminated over 25 scholarly articles in mathematical journals.
Upon her retirement from academia, Dr. Brechner had the opportunity to work with the Brain Institute on campus, collaborating with several students on exciting projects related to brain cancer and networks of the brain. She is now focused on studying technology and is interested in developing a better understanding of Einstein's theory of relatively. Reflecting on her life's work, Dr. Brechner hopes that her contributions will be helpful to others in the industry.
Born in New York City in 1936, she moved with her family to Miami Beach, FL in 1951. Becoming highly educated, she earned a bachelor's degree and master's in mathematics from the University of Miami in 1957 and 1959, respectively. During the summer of 1961, Dr. Brechner was selected to spend eight weeks at the National Science Foundation Summer Institute for Graduate Students in Topology. Continuing her education, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics from Louisiana State University in 1964.
To ensure her place at the forefront of her industry, Dr. Brechner became a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. She also became a member and served as the governor for the Florida section of the Mathematical Association of America.
In light of her accomplishments, Dr. Brechner received the George Pólya Prize for Expository Writing. Established in 1976, the coveted award recognizes individuals for articles of expository excellence published in The College Mathematics Journal.
