Dr. Boyce is a respected dentist who was named as the inaugural Associate Director of Clinical Affairs at the Fones School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 2021. With Fones faculty, Dr. Boyce initiated and developed a teledentistry program through grant funding provided by the City of Bridgeport, American Rescue Plan. Designed following the COVID-19 pandemic and the new parameters established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this teledentistry program involved sending students and faculty to remote sites off campus to provide dental hygiene care via affordable equipment and following up with virtual teleconferences.
Among various other responsibilities, Dr. Boyce manages patient care, the operations of a 30-chair dental clinic, and several other clinics her students are involved in off campus. She is also engaged in grant funding for underserved individuals and five dental programs that focus on providing dental care to children and senior citizens not covered by the state.
First hired by the University of Bridgeport in 2015, Dr. Boyce spent more than five years as a clinical dentist, adjunct faculty, and dental administrator on campus before being named to her present position. Looking toward the future, she aspires to continue advancing the program at the university by ensuring that cutting-edge technology remains at the forefront. She also aims to continue providing the Bridgeport community with various programs that financial constraints would otherwise prevent them from accessing proper dental care. As part of her efforts, Dr. Boyce is focused on funding through necessary grants and maintaining a collaborative effort with her fellow faculty members. Moreover, she and her colleagues aim to begin offering an expanded function dental assistant program to address the workforce shortage in the industry.
Dr. Boyce considers her transition into dental hygiene education her "second act." She began her career as an associate dentist in 1991 for a practitioner in Bethel, Connecticut while serving as attending dentist at the general practice residency program at Danbury Hospital, Danbury CT. Ultimately, she established her own practice in 1994, which she maintained for 25 years.
To prepare for her career, Dr. Boyce graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Scranton in 1986 and a Doctor of Medical Dentistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1990. Additionally, she completed her general practice residency in the dental division at Danbury Hospital in 1991. Dr. Boyce received Level I and Level II laser certification through the World Clinical Laser Institute and laser proficiency certification in laser safety through Global Laser Oral Health LLC.
To remain aware of developments in her field, Dr. Boyce is a member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry, the International Association of Orofacial Myology, the American Dental Association, the Connecticut State Dental Association, and the Bridgeport Dental Association.
Dr. Boyce received recognition with 2023 Teledentistry Education Innovation Award and 2020 Gold Star Merit Award from the Connecticut State Dental Association. She attests her success to the mentorship she received from colleagues and others who believed in her.
