Dr. Carrie Werkmeister Lauded for Excellence in Soil Science

Carrie Werkmeister, PhD lends years of expertise to her work with Gevo, Inc.

She is an accomplished research scientist whose efforts focus on soil and carbon protocols.

HURON, SD, September 20, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Carrie Werkmeister has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

An accomplished research scientist whose efforts focus on soil and carbon protocols, Dr. Werkmeister presently excels as a senior soil scientist for Gevo, Inc. Since obtaining the role in 2023, she has evaluated carbon levels within farm soil. By concentrating on how farmers grow their crops and maintain fields, she and her colleagues evaluate the amount of carbon that is being generated and how much of it is staying in the ground and therefore affecting soil health. Prior to joining Gevo, Dr. Werkmeister served as an assistant state soil scientist and wetland specialist for the United States Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service.

For more than a decade, Dr. Werkmeister gained valuable expertise in scientific research, laboratory management, and soil chemistry in the collegiate setting, working for North Dakota and South Dakota State University in varying positions. In 2003, she began in the field as an agronomist for Cenex. Similarly, Dr. Werkmeister mentors other women through WiN National Organization of Professional Women in Natural Resources Conservation Service.

An expert in her field, Dr. Werkmeister earned a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy from South Dakota State University in 2005. Subsequently, she expanded upon her professional knowledge, earning a Master of Science in Agronomy with a concentration in soil science from her alma mater, and a PhD in soil science and a college teaching certification in STEM education from North Dakota State University. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the ever-evolving fields of soil and crop science, Dr. Werkmeister aligns herself with the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America, the Soil and Water Conservation Society, the Soil Science Society of America, and the Professional Soil Scientist Association of South Dakota.

While her career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Werkmeister takes the most pride in influencing a producer to make changes in their farming system. Through small changes, she increases soil sustainability and ensures that her clients maintain their production goals. Though hard work and dedication have brought her far in her career, she credits her overall success to her family's support and ability to keep her grounded. Looking ahead, Dr. Werkmeister aims to make her mark in the agricultural field by helping producers implement management changes. In turn, this will ensure that the land is sustainable for the next generation.
