Mr. Heflin is an educator and retired Foreign Service Officer currently focusing on mentoring the next generation of foreign affairs and diplomacy experts. Inspired by his parents, who emphasized the value of education, and by his early exposure to international news via the excellent coverage in his hometown of Huntsville, Alabama's newspaper and the many immigrants in the community, Mr. Heflin pursued a broad range of postsecondary educational opportunities. He earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1983, and an additional Bachelor of Arts in political science and religion from Birmingham-Southern College, graduating magna cum laude in 1980. Mr. Heflin retired from the United States Foreign Service in 2023, and was named a Senior Fellow of The Fletcher School at Tufts University, where he teaches diplomacy in addition to being Executive Director of the School's Edward R.
