Also dedicated to civil advocacy, Dr. Kawas lends her expertise as a volunteer to multiple organizations. She served on the Washington Alzheimer's Association and the national Alzheimer's Association Business Consortium. She has also been an advisory with Nucleate since 2022 and one of the French-American Foundation Leaders in 2019.
Before her present role, Dr. Kawas worked as a clinical pharmacist at The University of Jordan Hospital in 2007 and became a staff pharmacist for Pharmacy1 in 2008. Following this time, she was a research associate for Washington State University in 2013. She also served as the vice president of research for Athira Pharma, Inc. from 2011 until 2014, becoming the chief executive officer and president in 2014. She and her team researched the technology platform of drugs for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease and other neurological diseases. At the time, she was one of only 22 women founders who took their company public. During her tenure there, she was the co-inventor of ATH-1017 and several other innovative drugs. She has also been featured in several publications, including The Wall Street Journal, BioSpace, and CIO Views, and has appeared in several podcasts to discuss her work.
Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Kawas was a finalist for the GeekWire Young Entrepreneur of the Year and EY Entrepreneur of the Year finalist and EY Entrepreneurial Winning Women in 2016. She also was a finalist for Health Innovation of the Year in 2019. She additionally was named to the Women to Watch in Life Sciences list by the Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association in 2015, was one of Seattle's Most Influential People in 2015 and selected as Biospace 7 Millennial Influencers in Biotech (2019), Endpoint CEOs 40 & Under in Life Science Leader (2017), and Puget Sound Business Journal 40 under 40 Award (2016). Added to these, she was honored with a Life Science Entrepreneurial Achievement Award in 2020 and an Alzheimer's Cure Coin Award in 2019.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Kawas earned a degree in pharmacy from The University of Jordan in 2008. Following this achievement, she attained a Doctor of Philosophy in molecular pharmacology and toxicology from Washington State University in 2011. She subsequently trained at an executive education program at the University of Washington Foster School of Business in 2015 and Wharton's Executive Education program in portfolio management (2023).
