At just eight years old, Mr. Maki became interested in flying after his uncle took him to an air show. Just four years later, he asked for a flight lesson as his birthday gift and began flying regularly by the age of 13. Driven to follow his passion, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management from Oklahoma State University. After gaining valuable expertise in the aviation industry through an internship at Trans World Airlines, Mr. Maki became a commercial airline pilot for Frontier Airlines and Trans States Airlines.
Since 2013, Mr. Maki has excelled in his role as an airline pilot with United Airlines. In addition to his general tasks, he evaluates newly hired pilots and co-pilots, mentors other employees, seeks out potential pilots for the company, and ensures that everyone is following standard operating procedures. Alongside his work as a pilot, he is in the process of establishing a leadership coaching company that will allow him to leverage his expertise to solve complex problems for a wide range of clientele.
Driven to expand his professional knowledge, Mr. Maki earned a master's degree in organizational leadership from Southern New Hampshire University in 2023. In order to remain abreast of ongoing industry changes, he aligns himself with the National Society of Leadership and Success, the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and the Society for Human Resource Management. Outside of his work, he contributes to his community by speaking to high school students around the country, coaching young pilots at United Airlines, and supporting St. Jude Children's Hospital and Cape Abilities in Massachusetts.
While his career has been filled with standout moments, Mr. Maki takes the most pride in serving with a recovery program for individuals dealing with substance abuse and addiction. Another highlight was being sponsored by AviNation Magazine to travel around the country as a speaker. The cornerstone of his success lies in the mentors he had that showed him the way. Looking ahead, Mr. Maki intends to launch his leadership consultancy, write a book, pursue a PhD in Leadership, and continue inspiring the next generation of young people.
