Charlene Fried Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Ms. Charlene Fried has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in English and literacy



She has traveled across the globe to teach and learn from multilingual children the importance and value of their languages, cultures, traditions, and stories.

An accomplished listee, Ms. Fried celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A faculty member at Sierra Vista High School (SVHS) in Baldwin Park, CA her entire career, Ms. Fried is an expert in teaching social-emotional learning, English, and English as a second language. Having served a diverse population of students throughout her distinguished tenure, she became recognized as the school's first bilingual teacher on campus.

Apart from teaching at the high school level, Ms. Fried also teaches at the university level. She was invited to teach at California State University, Los Angeles, and Loyola Marymount University. She serves as a Lecturer B at CSULA, in the Charter College of Education. She teaches ELD methodology classes, classroom management, and a variety of other classes in the credential program. She also supervises student teachers. She is a part-time lecturer at Loyola Marymount University and teaches ELD and Spanish methodology classes, literacy classes, assessment classes, and most recently, classes focusing on ways to successfully work with the diverse student populations the credential candidates will work with in the local schools.

As an extension of her work, Ms. Fried has been active as a workshop presenter for the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE), the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE), and other organizations. During her career, she has been invited to study and tour schools in Spain and Mexico. Her international travels have been instrumental in her insights regarding various school systems' structures and priorities abroad. Ms. Fried continues to study the Mayan language, and she and her son, Jose Luis Perez, have worked as volunteers in Quintana Roo, Mexico to advance Spanish and English literacy among the Mayan speaking children to help them expand academic and employment opportunities.

She has traveled across the globe to teach and learn from multilingual children the importance and value of their languages, cultures, traditions, and stories. She drove from Los Angeles to Brazil and traveled all over Asia to hear the stories of the people and share them with her students. Ms. Fried believes that people's stories define who they are and empower them to accomplish their dreams and share them with others.

Looking toward the future, Ms. Fried is considering volunteering with both CABE and NABE in retirement, as well as volunteering in Quintana Roo. She wants to continue traveling. She also wants to continue writing, which has been critical to her success as an effective writing teacher. Her students have won the CABE and NABE Essay Writing contests for the past three years. Drawing inspiration from her late husband, who passed away from COVID-19, she wants to continue his legacy of teaching. He was a dedicated elementary school teacher and Vietnam War veteran.

Highly educated, Ms. Fried received a Bachelor of Arts in English and Public Speaking from San Francsico State University in 1968 and a Master of Science in Bilingual Cross-Cultural Education from Pepperdine University in 1984. Additional educational pursuits to her credit include certification in Spanish from the University of Salamanca and the University of Valencia, Spain. She also holds credentials as a Bilingual Cross-Cultural Specialist in Bilingual Education in Spanish from Pepperdine University.

light of her success, Ms. Fried was recognized by both CABE and NABE as the Bilingual Teacher of the Year. She also received the Corazon Award from CABE and, among other accolades, in 2023, was named the Woman Educator of the Year by California Senator Susan Rubio. Aside from these many honors, Ms. Fried has appeared in various news outlets and podcasts, including EdSource Magazine in 2021 and 2022, regarding her unique classroom approach. The Baldwin Park Unified School District also recognized Ms. Fried in May 2022 by naming the Sierra Vista High School Library, the Charlene Fried Library, in her honor.
