Arthur F. Gelb, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Gelb is recognized for his expertise as a renowned pulmonologist affiliated with the Lakewood Regional Medical Center in Lakewood, California, since 1974. As part of his responsibilities, he helps manage the intensive care unit and serves as the medicine and pulmonary department chair. Dr. Gelb has also maintained his practice as the owner of Arthur F. Gelb Medical Corporation.

In addition to his fieldwork, Dr. Gelb has served an instrumental role as a clinical professor of medicine in the Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles Medical Center since 1974. Besides lecturing, he is heavily engaged in research, focusing on the mechanisms underlying various respiratory diseases. Dr. Gelb has also served as a visiting professor at numerous medical universities worldwide, including the U.S., Ireland, Japan, Brazil, Sweden, Israel, Argentina, Australia, England, France, Belgium, Germany and Canada.

Before he began practicing and teaching as a civilian, Dr. Gelb honorably served his country as a major in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1973. During that time, he gained expertise as a pulmonologist at the Madigan Army General Hospital in Fort Lewis and the McChord Air Force Base in Washington.

Disseminating much of his research, Dr. Gelb has contributed over 130 scholarly articles on pulmonary diseases in such professional publications as Chest, European Respiratory Journal, the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases Journal, and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. He also lent his expertise as a reviewer for various other publications and was active on the editorial board of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology from 2016 to 2021. Moreover, Dr. Gelb recently released a study about children with cystic fibrosis.

Grateful for his long and successful career, Dr. Gelb draws a sense of satisfaction in knowing that he has significantly contributed to the health and well-being of so many patients. Dr. Gelb graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Vanderbilt University and a Doctor of Medicine from Saint Louis University (mentor Dr. Ray Slavin), followed by a residency in internal and pulmonary medicine at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital Center, where he rose to become chief resident of pulmonary diseases (mentors Harold Lyons, MD and John Addrizzo, MD). He also completed a fellowship in pulmonary medicine at the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center (mentor Jay A. Nadel, MD, Chief, IVRI) and studied with the late Noe Zamel, MD, a pulmonary professor from the University of Toronto Medical Center. Dr. Gelb holds board certification in internal medicine and pulmonary diseases from the American Board of Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Diseases.

Affiliated with numerous professional organizations related to his field, Dr. Gelb is active with the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians, American Thoracic Society, and the European Respiratory Society. He notably served as an American delegate to the European Respiratory Society from 2012 to 2015.

Dr. Gelb has held fellowships with the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI), and the American Thoracic Society. He also received recognition from the AAAAI as the Distinguished Clinician of the Year in 2023 and was named among the Top 180 Scientists in 2018 by the American Thoracic Society.
