Mark J. Congdon Jr., PhD, has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

    NEW HAVEN, CT, January 11, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mark J. Congdon Jr., PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all considered during the selection process.

A dedicated communication and education professional, Dr. Congdon has earned distinction as an assistant professor of communication studies for Sacred Heart University. Since 2020, he has focused on conducting teaching research for the university and the community, ensuring the highest standards of service while teaching classes centered on public relations, advertising, and strategic communication. He collaborates with organizations to help them achieve their goals from a communication, public relations, and advertising perspective. His research endeavors concern eccentric community-engaged methodologies and methods, working on projects with local organizations to advance social justice efforts in an accessible manner and connecting the community with higher education.

Additionally, Dr. Congdon has lent his expertise as a national board member for US El Salvador Sister Cities since 2019. He is also a valued member of the Public Relations Society of America, the International Communication Association, and the National Communication Association, among other professional organizations.

Prior to his current position, Dr. Congdon began his career as a corps member for Teach for America in 2008, where he was a special education teacher and department chair for Northern Vance High School until 2010. He became a special education teacher for the Wake County Public School System in 2010. In 2011, he served as a communication instructor and service-learning research assistant for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Dr. Congdon continued his career as an editorial assistant for Partnerships: A Journal of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement in 2012. In 2013, he was an intervention specialist for The Exploris School. He became an assistant supervisor for the Innovate for Maine Internship Program-Foster Center for Student Innovation at the University of Maine in 2015. While in this position, Dr. Congdon was also an instructor of communication and an assistant research and program evaluator for the University of Maine from 2014 until 2017. He then joined the University of North Texas as a lecturer of communication in 2017 and was an assistant professor of communication for The College of Saint Rose from 2018 to 2020.

Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Congdon was admitted to the Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania AmeriCorps Program in 2006. He received a Helping Hands Award for outstanding leadership in diversity from the Wilkes University Center for Global Education and Diversity in 2008. He was also honored by the Scholars Recognition Program of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro's Office of Multicultural Affairs in 2012 and with a John Andrew and Margaret E. Robinson Memorial Fellowship from the communication studies department in 2012. In 2013, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro chapter of Tri Sigma awarded him the Faculty of Excellence. Additionally, he received a Social Impact Award for Outstanding Educator of the Year and an Honorable Mention for Mentor of the Year from PR News in 2022. In 2023, Dr. Congdon was also a finalist for Campus Compact's Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement due to the impact of his community-engaged research and teaching.

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Congdon earned a Bachelor of Arts in communication studies from Wilkes University in 2008. Following this achievement, he attained a Master of Arts in communication studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2013. He subsequently gained a Doctor of Philosophy in communication with concentrations in social entrepreneurship, communication pedagogy, and educational leadership from the University of Maine in 2018. Well-qualified in his field, he holds a certification in k-12 special education and teaching from East Carolina University.

Within the coming years, Dr. Congdon intends to continue to be involved in his local community in New Haven, Connecticut, by serving as a member of the city's Commission on Equal Opportunities, and expanding and growing the community-engaged service-learning efforts and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives that are part of Sacred Heart University's curriculum. He also plans to continue his involvement within his institution through different leadership opportunities, such as being an Inclusive Excellence Fellow and a mentor and faculty coach for faculty in the Service-Learning Fellowship, among other opportunities.
