Aside from his distinguished career in academia, Dr. Hillenbrand found remarkable success in private practice as a psychiatrist since 1976.

Dr. Hillenbrand honorably served his country in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. During that time, he provided psychiatric care to inpatients and outpatients, including soldiers' relatives. He received the Meritorious Service Medal for his research during President Ford's Amnesty Program.

To prepare for his medical career, Dr. Hillenbrand graduated from Loyola University Chicago with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1965 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1969. Dr. Hillenbrand maintains affiliation with several professional organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association and the Illinois Psychiatric Society. He has received teaching awards from Loyola University, Rosalind Franklin University, and the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Hillenbrand attributes his professional accomplishments to his German-Irish heritage, his father's success as a psychiatrist, his mother's contributions as a nurse at his father's office, and to the many patients he feels fortunate to have treated.
