MIAMI, FL, February 02, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Frank D. Marks, ScD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Marks is an experienced meteorologist affiliated with the Hurricane Research Division at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)/Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML). Serving a critical role in numerous projects, including acquiring new radar systems and aircraft, he also helped initiate the Hurricane Forecast Improvement Program.

Employed by the federal agency since 1980, Dr. Marks began as a research meteorologist and subsequently spent 20 years as the director of the Hurricane Research Division between 2003 and 2023. Besides his primary objectives with the NOAA/AOML, he was an adjunct professor in the department of meteorology and physical oceanography at the Rosenstiel School for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Miami from 1993-2019 and a fellow at the school's Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies from 1992019. Previously, Dr. Marks garnered success as a senior fellow at the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research at the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1997 to 2012.

As a recognized expert in tropical cyclones, Dr. Marks has been responsible for flying in large, four-engine turboprop aircraft into the eye of storms. Since beginning his career with the NOAA/AOML, he has flown into over 100 tropical cyclones, more than 60 of which were hurricanes, and made over 500 penetrations into hurricane eyes. This critical work allows him and his team to gather information from the aircraft to better understand how the storms work and provide better forecast guidance. Dr. Marks has also become a seasoned researcher, disseminating over 235 scholarly journal articles in various scientific publications and garnering over 9,400 citations. Moreover, he remains active as the co-chair of the Interagency Council for Advancing Meteorological Services Committee on Observational Systems (CObS) Working Group for Aerial Reconnaissance Equipment.

Throughout his career, Dr. Marks has taken advantage of opportunities to explore and expand his interests in meteorology by conducting research abroad in places like West Africa, Borneo, Guadalcanal, Australia, India, China, and Japan. While working toward his master's degree, he also participated in a significant three-month experiment in West Africa that sparked his interest in tropical meteorology.

In preparation for his career, Dr. Marks graduated from Belknap College in New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Science in meteorology in 1973, followed by a Master of Science and Doctor of Science in meteorology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1975 and 1981, respectively.

Dr. Marks' success has been recognized with a Verner E. Suomi Technology Medal for his contributions to the development of the airborne Doppler radar program by the American Meteorological Society in 2011. He also received the Joanne Simpson Tropical Meteorology Research Award from the American Meteorological Society for outstanding mentorship of younger scientists in 2021.
