Mr. Foran has tried several notable cases throughout his career, including Steven A.W DeJaray, et al. v. Lattice Semiconductor Corp., in which he obtained a complete defense verdict in a case seeking over $182 million in damages. Throughout his career, Mr. Foran has also maintained a robust pro bono practice. His work on behalf of the National Abortion Federation in National Abortion Federation (NAF) v. Center for Medical Progress et al. was written about extensively in the national media, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Los Angeles Times.
Before becoming a partner with Steptoe LLP, Mr. Foran was a litigation partner (and formerly an associate) with Morrison & Foerster LLP in San Francisco. Prior to practicing law Mr. Foran served as a law clerk for the Honorable Diarmuid O'Scannlain of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Mr. Foran earned a Bachelor of Arts in English, History, and Classics from the National University of Ireland in 1991, and a Higher Diploma with Honors in Irish Folklore from University College Dublin in 1993. Mr. Foran graduated summa cum laude from Cornell Law School in 2002, and was the winner of the Kerr Memorial Prize for Distinguished Academic Performance for placing second in graduating class of over 180 students.
Mr. Foran is active in the legal community. He is a member of the San Francisco Bar Association, the California Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. He is a member of Board of Directors of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers, Northern California, and is a past member of the Board of Directors of Bay Area Legal Aid, one of the largest legal aid providers in California.

Prior winners of the award include Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun, the ACLU, and three United States Senators.
