Dr. Yen is a distinguished figure in human factors and user experience design. As the senior manager at Becton Dickinson and Company – Diagnostic Solutions, a Maryland-based company and leader in medical technology and health care, he has been instrumental in steering the company's design philosophy towards a human-centered approach. Dr. Yen's responsibilities encompass developing user-centric designs that prioritize customer needs over technological capabilities. His expertise lies in understanding user needs and leveraging cutting-edge technology to enhance product interaction and functionality.

Before his current position, Dr. Yen honed his skills as a human factors and usability engineering manager at ZOLL Medical - LifeVest in Pittsburgh from 2017 to 2020. His tenure there was marked by significant contributions to the usability engineering of life-saving wearable cardiac defibrillators. From 2016 to 2017, Dr. Yen led the innovation laboratory at Hyper Innovation in Wisconsin, fostering an environment of creativity and technological advancement. Moreover, he lent his expertise to many clients as the owner-consultant for Lytech Consulting between 1998 and 2017.

During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Yen spent significant time at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Beginning his graduate studies in 1988 and working as a research assistant, he remained on campus for three decades. Some of his earlier positions included lecturing and researching human factors and ergonomic analysis and design, serving as a scientist within the Trace Research and Development Center and the Biomedical Engineering and Industrial & Systems Engineering departments, where he contributed significantly to research and development, and worked as an instrumentation innovator-instructor. Among other noteworthy roles, Dr. Yen was the technical director of the university's Internet of Things laboratory, where he explored applications in various industries, and the associate director of the occupational ergonomics and biomechanics laboratory, where he applied his knowledge to improve workplace ergonomics and safety. All of Dr. Yen's endeavors are focused on the application of Human Centered Design methodologies for all product and service designs.

Dr. Yen's career is marked by several patents that reflect his innovative spirit and dedication to improving user experiences. During his doctoral studies, he also successfully developed software for efficient time & motion analysis. As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Yen has authored approximately a dozen scholarly articles, which have been cited over 300 times. Besides his work-related endeavors, he has given back his time and expertise to the startup and entrepreneur community as a mentor.

In preparation for his career, Dr. Yen received a Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering at Northwestern University and a Doctor of Philosophy in industrial engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Additionally, he received an honor code certification from edX for MIT Professional Education Digital Programs for the Internet of Things: Roadmap to a Connected World. Dr. Yen's academic journey has shaped his approach to innovation and design within biomedical engineering, a field he passionately advocates for its potential to transform health care.

As part of his continued success, Dr. Yen's professional affiliations include membership in the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and the User Experience Design Consortium. He credits his professional accomplishments to a growth mindset that embraces continuous learning and adaptation. This philosophy has guided Dr. Yen since his early days at Northwestern University, where he was part of the second cohort to graduate with a degree in biomedical engineering. Dr. Yen continues his goal for global healthcare equity through human/patient centered design of medical products and services.
