Helen Wong Smith has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

    HILO, HI, April 16, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Helen Wong Smith has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Backed by her considerable knowledge of Hawaiian history and culture, Ms. Wong Smith excels as the first Asian president of the Society of American Archivists and as Archivist for University Records for the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. In this capacity, she maintains responsibility for the records of the university and faculty papers. Previously, she worked as the Librarian/Archivist of the State Historic Preservation Division and as the Executive Director of the Kaua'i Historical Society. During the early stages of her career, Ms. Wong Smith gained valuable expertise through archivist, librarian, research, and recruitment positions with the Pacific Island Network of the National Park Service, the Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, the Hawaiʻi Medical Library, Gemini North Observatory, and Kamehameha Schools in both their education and endownment divisions.

Before establishing herself professionally, Ms. Wong Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts in Hawaiian Studies from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Subsequently, she completed a Master of Library and Information Science in archival management from her alma mater, a PhD in communication and information sciences, and certifications through the CITI Program. She has maintained her status as a Certified Archivist from the Academy of Certified Archivists for over two decades. She is a member of Beta Phi Mu, the Library Honor Society and Phi Gamma Mu, and the University of Hawaiʻi Alpha Chapter of the International Honor Society in the Social Sciences.

In light of her professional achievements, Ms. Wong Smith won the Agnes C. Conrad Award from the Association of Hawaiʻi Archivists, the Lei Lau Kukui Award from the Hawaiʻi Student Chapter Society of American Archivists, and the President's Award for Excellence from the Council of State Archivists. In 2016, the Society of American Archivsits named her a Distinguished Fellow. While her career has been filled with highlights, she takes the most pride in introducing cultural competency to the archival profession and developing a curriculum delivered at several prestigious universities and library, archives, and museums internationally. Though hard work and dedication have brought her far in her career, she credits her success to being someone who cannot say no. Looking toward the future, Ms. Wong Smith aims to finish her PhD dissertation and increase her consulting work.
