Driven by a lifelong passion for learning and the inspiration of a math teacher who suggested that computers would play a major role in the field's growth, he earned a Master of Science in computer science from the University of Iowa. He ultimately achieved a PhD in the same subject at Texas A&M University in 1973, becoming one of the first three graduates of the program.
