For over 40 years, Edward C. McCain has served the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). Since 2018, he has operated as the first African American distinguished engineer in IBM Z. Previously, he worked for five years as the first African American senior technical staff member. During high school, Mr. McCain pursued his passion for carpentry and completed pertinent vocational training, graduating in 1978. Instabilities in the job market for construction skills then led him to participate in an 18-month course to become an electronics technician. Shortly after completing the course, he joined IBM in 1982.
