Leveraging more than 45 years of professional excellence, Dr. Sacknoff is well-regarded in the field of medicine. With a particular focus on urology, he has been retired since 2018, having spent the last decade of his career as a clinical professor of urology at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Virginia. Adjacent to this appointment, Dr. Sacknoff served as the chief of urology at Smyth County Community Hospital, affiliated with Ballad Health, in Marion, Virginia, from 2006 to 2018 and a clinical assistant professor of surgery, with an emphasis on urology, at Mount Auburn Hospital and Harvard Medical School from 2005 to 2018.
Notably, Dr. Sacknoff was the president of Cambridge Urological Associates between 1993 and 2006. Possessing comprehensive knowledge of general and pediatric urology, he provided care to the greater Boston area alongside a group of four physicians, with concurrent appointments as the director of research and principal investigator at Cambridge Urological Research Associates Inc. from 1998 to 2000. For nearly 20 years, between 1988 and 2006, Dr. Sacknoff further thrived as an attending staff urologist at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Massachusetts. Lending his expertise to a myriad of other hospitals, such as Winchester Hospital, Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Malden Hospital, Cambridge Hospital and Emerson Hospital, Dr. Sacknoff also lectured extensively at the Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine from 1982 to 2005 and was an instructor in surgery and urology at Harvard Medical School in Boston from 1979 to 2005.
Other clinical appointments to Dr. Sacknoff's credit include service as the chief of the division of urology and an attending urologist at Symmes Hospital in Arlington, Massachusetts, between 1980 and 1999, a courtesy staff member at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston in 1978, and an instructor in surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School from 1977 to 1978. At the inception of his career in 1976, Dr. Sacknoff directed the G.U. Tumor Clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital. Disseminating his knowledge to textbooks, medical journals and various educational materials, Dr. Sacknoff likewise served on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Laser Surgery and Medicine for many years.
Among the many significant milestones of his career, Dr. Sacknoff is particularly gratified by the opportunities to work overseas to teach fellow urologists across seven different countries. Impressively, he was selected as part of a vanguard group of urologists to represent the United States in teaching new urologic techniques in China in 1983, having then introduced the application of cold knife urethrotomy for urethral strictures and discussed the application of laser technology in treating bladder tumors and stones. Over the following 15 years, he developed techniques in urologic laser surgery, as well as served as the national chairman of urology for the American Society of Laser Surgery and taught urologic laser techniques to over 4,000 urologists.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Sacknoff has received numerous accolades. Receiving a Citation for Contributions in Medicine and Community Service from the Town of Marion, Virginia, in 2018, he also earned the coveted Leon Goldman National Medical Excellence Award from the Laser Centers of America/International Biomedical Optics Society in 1995, recognizing his invaluable contributions to clinical laser surgery. He was elected a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a former clinical fellow of the American Cancer Society.
Dr. Sacknoff graduated Deering High School in Portland, Maine where he broke the state record in high school swimming in the 100 yard butterfly. He continued varsity swimming at Tufts University where he was Most Valuable Player for three years and elected Captain of the varsity his senior year in 1967. He graduated that year with a Bachelor of Science in biology.
Subsequently, he completed a fellowship in neuropathology at the Boston VA Hospital in 1968 before earning a Doctor of Medicine from the Tufts University School of Medicine in 1971. Following the receipt of his medical degree, Dr. Sacknoff completed an internship in surgery and a residency in general surgery at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. Pivoting his medical trajectory toward urology shortly thereafter, he then finished a residency in urology at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1976 before being named chief resident of urology in 1977. Dr. Sacknoff is a diplomate of the American Board of Urology.
Outside routine work responsibilities, Dr. Sacknoff founded the Mountain Empire fly fishing chapter of Trout Unlimited in Virginia, which became the leading chapter in the state. In 2018, he was named Conservationist of the Year by the American Fisheries Society and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Looking forward, Dr. Sacknoff aims to continue enjoying his well-deserved retirement. In this regard, he notes that he is dedicated to caring for his wife and family, which includes six children and six grandchildren. In his leisure time, he enjoys fly fishing, landscaping and cooking.
