WINSTON SALEM, NC, January 17, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Fred L. Horton, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
With more than five decades of excellence in higher religion education with a center on the history of the Hebrew Language, especially in the Second Temple period, Dr. Horton has earned distinction as a professor emeritus of religion with Wake Forest University. Having joined the university as a professor of religion in 1970, he was appointed a John Thomas Albritton professor of religion in 1991.
Since achieving emeritus status in 2013, Dr. Horton has focused his efforts on teaching courses on the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. He also helped to craft the Hebrew program for undergraduates and later for graduate students and has developed an online Hebrew course for a seminary in Botswana. Among his professional accomplishments, he was honored with teaching awards from Wake Forest University, both as a tenured and non-tenured professor.
Throughout his life, Dr. Horton has also dedicatedly served his community. An Episcopal priest, served as a chaplain for children in hospice and as a supply priest for various churches. He volunteered in a civil air patrol, assisted a local downtown church, worked with an amateur radio emergency service and is a volunteer examiner for the Federal Communications Commission. Additionally, he is a supporter of the American Civil Liberties Union and a valued member of the Society of Biblical Literature, the Egypt Exploration Society and the American Society of Overseas Research.
Throughout his background in archeology, Dr. Horton has had the opportunity to excavate in some of the most fascinating locations, acquiring a wealth of knowledge and insights along the way. He also authored numerous articles for professional journals and books, including "The Melchizedek Tradition," which he published through Cambridge University Press. However, he considers the achievements of his students a highlight of his career, having mentored countless individuals over his professorship, many of whom went on to achieve their own great successes.
To prepare for his professional journey, Dr. Horton earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of North Carolina in 1964. Following this achievement, he attained a Bachelor of Divinity from the Union Theological Seminary in 1967 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Biblical studies from Duke University in 1971.
Within the coming years, Dr. Horton intends to develop a second-year Hebrew course for the people of Gaborone in Botswana and is teaching an experimental course on Greek online as well. Added to these endeavors, he is working on a research project that explores the topic of forgiveness in an apocalyptic context.
