Inspired by his grandfather, a physician, Dr. Maylahn was originally intent on following in his footsteps. While completing a bachelor's degree in psychology and biology from the University of Vermont, he met someone who earned a Master of Public Health from Yale and spoke highly of the program. This encounter encouraged him to attend the same university and pursue a career in public health. After graduating from Yale University's School of Medicine in 1978 with a Master of Public Health in epidemiology and public, Dr. Maylahn joined the Vermont Heart Association as the hypertension program coordinator.
Over the years, Dr. Maylahn gained valuable expertise as a research scientist with the New York State Department of Health and furthered his education, earning a Doctor of Public Health from the University at Albany. Between 1985 and 2023, he worked as a program research specialist with the New York State Department of Health. Before retiring, Dr. Maylahn oversaw the department's program areas and collaborated closely with the commissioner's office. His areas of responsibility included chronic disease prevention, surveillance, and policy development in coordination with the commissioner's office and colleagues across the agency.
Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Maylahn aligns himself with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists, the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors, and the American Public Health Association. Due to his vast breadth of knowledge, he reviews manuscripts for journals. He contributes to various articles in professional publications, including "Local Health Department-Hospital Collaborations for Community Health Assessment and Program Planning" and "Factors Affecting Evidence-Based Decision Making in Local Health Departments."
Dr. Maylahn has been honored many times for his outstanding achievements, earning awards from the CDC, the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors, and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in obtaining his doctoral degree and researching the sustainability of partnerships between hospitals and departments. During his tenure with the New York State Department of Health, he also liaised with various public health professionals, another standout aspect of his storied career. Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, he credits his success to the people he has met, including Dr. Guthrie Birkhead, a longtime colleague at the Department of Health and member of his doctoral dissertation committee, and Benjamin Shaw, a professor at the University at Albany. Looking toward the future, Dr. Maylahn intends to stay engaged with public health organizations and the many professionals he has met over his career. He will continue to mentor the next generation of public health professionals, one of his favorite activities.
