INDIANAPOLIS, January 18, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Margaret E. Higgs, MS, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Ms. Higgs dedicated over 40 years to education before retiring in 2016, demonstrating a profound commitment to academic excellence and student development. Her career began in 1973 as a special education teacher with the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), where she served for over 15 years. In 1989, Ms. Higgs transitioned to a leadership role, enjoying over another three decades in this capacity.

Promoted to become the principal of the Paul I. Miller School 114, Ms. Higgs remained on campus until 1996. Her tenure was marked by significant improvements in school performance and student outcomes. Ms. Higgs then took on the principal role at the Harriet Beecher Stowe School 64 from 1996 to 1999, continuing her mission to enhance educational standards. Subsequently, she became the principal of the Rousseau McClellan School 91, a K-8 open-concept school with 600 students, between 1999 and 2016. Under Ms. Higgs's leadership, the school underwent a remarkable transformation, which included implementing strict discipline policies and replacing ineffective teachers with 25 highly qualified educators. These changes notably led to the school receiving an award for its outstanding revamp and achieving National Blue Ribbon status.

In preparation for her career in education, Ms. Higgs earned a Bachelor of Arts in education from Purdue University in 1973 and a Master of Science in education from Butler University in 1979. She furthered her education with a Graduate Degree Plus 60 in educational leadership and administration from Butler University in 1991.

Ms. Higgs's expertise extended beyond traditional education roles. She was an expert in emergency preparedness training and was actively involved in various industry-related organizations. She served on the Facilities Renovation Interviewing Committee for Contractors from 2010 to 2013 and was a member of the Bargaining Team and Negotiation Team for IPS from 1993 to 2003. Additionally, Ms. Higgs served as the president of the Indianapolis Association of Administrators, Supervisors and Consultants from 1993 to 2000 and president of the Indianapolis chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children between 1983 and 1988.

Apart from her work-related endeavors, Ms. Higgs remains active with several civic associations and creative publications, including as a board of directors member for AYS Inc. since 2016. She previously served on the board of the Boy Scouts of America. Furthermore, Ms. Higgs co-authored an article in the School Library Journal in 1973 with Dr. John Stewig titled 'Girls Grow Up to Be Mommies: A Study of Sexism in Children's Literature.'

While a special education teacher in Indianapolis, Ms. Higgs was recognized for her exceptional dedication, earning the Teacher of the Year Runner-Up Award and the Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award in 1988. In light of her community involvement, she was honored to receive the Reaching for Tomorrow Spark Plug Award from Boy Scouts of America in 2012, the Vivian Harris Award from Boy Scouts of America in 2015 and the Hubbard Life-Changing Educator Award from United Way of Central Indiana and the Hubbard Family Foundation in 2016.
