OLYMPIA, WA, January 23, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kyle Steele Couperus, MD, MBA, BSN, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Couperus is an accomplished physician leader, educator, and innovator with nearly 20 years of experience in the health care sector. He has demonstrated exceptional skill in rallying diverse teams around common goals, developing consensus, and maximizing value for customers and team members. Dr. Couperus has dedicated his career to advancing medical education and clinical practice through innovative technologies and research.
Specializing in the field of emergency medicine, Dr. Couperus currently serves as the chief product officer for Exonicus, is a practicing physician at Madigan Army Medical Center, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, an assistant professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, a principal investigator and researcher at the esteemed Geneva Foundation, a board member for the Emergency Medical Foundation, and is a U.S. Army Reserves Officer (Major) with the 75th Innovation Command.
Growing up on a dairy farm in upstate New York, Dr. Couperus prioritized academics as he received a homeschool education. He entered college at age 15, got an Associate of Science degree in nursing from SUNY-Canton, and then graduated magna cum laude from SUNY-Plattsburgh while earning his Bachelor of Applied Science in Nursing. He worked as a licensed practical nurse, a nurse's aide, and a critical care nurse -- but he didn't stop there. Dr. Couperus lived three hours from the nearest medical school, but his desire to become a doctor wouldn't be tempered: he read about becoming a doctor on ehow.com, bought a new bookbag, and applied to medical school.
No one in his family had attended more than a few college classes. Still, Dr. Couperus changed that trend: He finished near the top of his class at the University of Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and, during medical school, was commissioned into the U.S. Army following the allure of excitement and personal ambition. After medical school, he pursued emergency medicine's practical and adrenaline-filled specialty, with high-performing teams forming and disbanding every shift. In 2018, he completed a combat deployment in Baghdad, Iraq, and transitioned to the U.S. Army Reserves in 2022. He has held various positions throughout his military career, including second lieutenant, captain, and major within Army Healthcare. His roles have included emergency medicine informatics specialist, director of risk management, and research director at Madigan Army Medical Center.
During residency, he had an idea to improve trauma training using virtual reality medical simulations. He and his colleagues were awarded multiple grants, completed several iterations, and created a system that is now the base for an international training platform. Through these projects, he developed a passion for creating technology and innovation that saves lives. At the Geneva Foundation, Dr. Couperus leads artificial intelligence and machine learning initiatives for clinical decision support.
Dr. Couperus is also the chief product officer at Exonicus Inc., overseeing the development of virtual reality and augmented reality content for medical training. His work has led to creating a minimum viable product aimed at training military medics in life-saving techniques for battlefield situations. This innovative technology leverages augmented reality and virtual reality to provide realistic simulations for treating traumatic injuries.
Dr. Couperus has been recognized throughout his career with numerous awards, including the GSACEP Rising Star Award in 2019, a Meritorious Service Medal in 2018, and multiple Army Commendation medals. He has authored several publications on topics ranging from virtual reality trauma simulators to unique medical case reports.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Couperus enjoys skiing, cycling, exercising, hiking, traveling, reading, and spending time with his wife and two children. Looking ahead to the future, he is passionate about revolutionizing medical education through simulation technology and artificial intelligence. He aims to develop innovative tools that empower clinicians to offer their patients superior care and commercialize those tools through successful business ventures that change the world.
