Dr. Strickland has dedicated almost five decades to the field of medicine. Since 1998, he has served as the director of WJ Medical Associates and enjoyed a distinguished career in obstetrics-gynecology and reproductive endocrinology until 2014, when he delivered his last baby at the age of 70. Since then, he has collaborated with a team of ten physician assistants and nurse practitioners, ensuring quality care through regular quality improvement meetings, along with addiction medicine services at High Country Recovery, in Boone, NC.

Day to day, Dr. Strickland's commitment to healthcare extends beyond traditional hours, as he remains available around the clock through various communication channels. His professional career began in the United States Air Force, where he served for over 23 years, including five years as a nuclear engineer. His military service provided him with a foundation for his medical career, which saw him rise to Division Chief at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, formerly known as Wilford Hall Medical Center, from 1986 to 1989. Dr. Strickland's transition from nuclear engineering to medicine was driven by a desire for spiritual fulfillment, following the models of his father and paternal grandfather.

Following his military tenure, Dr. Strickland practiced obstetrics and gynecology at Aramco in Saudi Arabia. In 1995, he decided to retire from that position and open a local gynecology clinic, which he subsequently closed in 2010, shifting to locum tenens work. He also added addiction medicine to his resume in 2010, serving as the medical director of a methadone clinic, Stepping Stone, in Boone, North Carolina, a position he held until 2024.

Dr. Strickland is licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina and North Carolina, and his expertise in reproductive endocrinology is recognized by his board certification in the specialty, a milestone he holds in high regard. As a third-generation physician, he continues his family's legacy in medicine while also contributing to professional organizations such as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society of Professional Journalists. In pursuit of a career in medicine, Dr. Strickland first earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia in 1966.

Thereafter, Dr. Strickland furthered his education with a Master of Science in nuclear engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1968 and an MD degree in 1977 from the Medical College of Georgia. His residency in ObGyn was accomplished at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in 1981 and his fellowship in reproductive endocrinology was completed at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas culminating in 1983. Overall, he attributes his success to maintaining an active lifestyle, actively engaging with other medical professionals, and an inquisitive nature, even after semi-retirement.

Beyond his clinical foci, Dr. Strickland contributes scholarly articles to professional journals, with over 70 articles published in the scientific literature. His personal life is enriched by his wife Karen, an RN Clinical Nurse Specialist, a daughter, Leslie, who is a family MD (thereby 4th generation physician), a daughter Bevin, a DNP Nurse Anesthetist (thereby a 3rd generation RN), and their son Dan Jr, a musical agent and festival promoter. He enjoys reading, watching movies, boating, writing, and traveling globally with his wife in their leisure time. Looking ahead, Dr. Strickland plans to continue working with healthcare professionals, driven by his enduring passion for medicine and his commitment to staying intellectually engaged.
