Dr. Herrera de Franco is an expert in international nutrition, humanitarian nutrition, and food security who has taught full-time as a visiting professor at Framingham State University since 2022 and as an adjunct professor at Simmons University since 2023. In these roles, she mentors master's degree students and teaches seminars on human rights related to food and health to doctoral students. Dr. Herrera de Franco's academic journey has been enriched by her hands-on experience in emergency nutrition projects in collaboration with the World Food Program and participation in a nutrition and food security cluster in Venezuela.
Having begun her career in higher education in Venezuela, Dr. Herrera de Franco was an associate professor at the Center for Development Studies at the Central University of Venezuela. Her work laid the foundation for her subsequent roles in the U.S., where she has developed innovative proposals to address hunger and malnutrition. Dr. Herrera de Franco takes pride in providing integrative perspectives to the next generation of students, preparing them to tackle complex global challenges.
Becoming highly educated in her native country, Dr. Herrera de Franco obtained a Doctor of Medicine from the Central University of Venezuela, followed by a master's degree in nutrition and a Doctor of Philosophy in human nutrition and public policy from Simón Bolívar University. Additionally, she completed coursework in epidemiology research at Boston University and participated in the Harvard Executive Program on applying behavioral insight to the design of public policies at Harvard University.
Dr. Herrera de Franco's professional affiliations include membership as a correspondent member of the Venezuelan Society of Pediatrics and an international member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She is also chair-elect for Latinos and Hispanics in Dietetics and Nutrition at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, a member of the Latin American Society of Nutrition and a principal investigator for the Latin American Study of Nutrition and Health. Civically invested, Dr. Herrera de Franco is a board of directors member for the Bengoa Foundation and Probebe in Venezuela. A well-written writer, she has contributed numerous articles to peer-reviewed journals. She also co-presented the Wimpfheimer-Guggenheim International Lecture on Food and Nutrition Disaster and Humanitarian Relief in 2019.
Dr. Herrera de Franco has received numerous awards, including Outstanding Dietitian of the Year from the International Affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2018 and the Trinko Award from Latinos and Hispanics in Dietetics and Nutrition at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2022.
Looking ahead, Dr. Herrera de Franco aspires to contribute to creating a world where everyone has adequate nutrition. She envisions herself collaborating more integratively to achieve a better-nourished global population. Her goals include working with large teams to educate communities and advocate for better food quality within the human rights framework.
