In preparation for her career, Ms. Murphy earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Widener University in 1989, followed by a Master of Education and Master of Science in clinical counseling from Wilmington University. Moreover, she garnered credentials as a registered nurse, licensed therapist, and professional development trainer.

Ms. Murphy is also deeply involved in various professional organizations. She has been the executive director of the Delaware Professional Counseling Association since 2012 and is a member of the American Counseling Association, the American Nurses Association, the National Negro Council of Women, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. In addition, she is a Registered Parliamentarian and in the professional organization of National Association of Parliamentarians as well as the Parlimentarian for the Delaware State Association of Parliamentarians, and s member of Parlimentarians of Kent County Delaware. These affiliations underscore her commitment to advancing her field and supporting her peers. Ms. Murphy is also notably recognized as the immediate past national president of Chi Eta Phi Sorority Inc. since 2021.

Beyond her professional engagement, Ms. Murphy is active civically. She volunteers for St. Jude Walk, a local food bank, and various community education programs, where she provides mental health training to local communities.

Ms. Murphy's contributions have been recognized with several awards, including the Fellows Lifetime Achievement Award from Robert Wood Johnson, the Dedication Service Award from Quality Screening Service in Delaware, and the St. Jude Multicultural Award.
