Mr. James's work primarily involves collaborating with private developers and corporate clients, city councils, and regulatory bodies, including the California and U.S. Environmental Protection Agencies, to address environmental challenges and facilitate community development projects. Notably, he has provided expert witness testimony in cost-recovery efforts and other litigation matters.

Before his tenure at EKI, Mr. James began his environmental consulting career at Kennedy Jenks Consultants, where he worked closely with the founders of EKI. During his time there, he contributed to various environmental consulting projects, focusing on remediation efforts and addressing contamination issues. Mr. James's experience at Kennedy Jenks laid the foundation for his future endeavors at EKI, where he continues to engage in significant projects such as the redevelopment projects in Emeryville, California, the Brooklyn Basin redevelopment in Oakland, California, and addressing historical contamination in Silicon Valley.

Mr. James began his career with Chevron Corporation after earning a bachelor's degree in geology from California State University East Bay in 1977. At Chevron, he was involved in heavy oil projects and geothermal exploration across the western United States. While working full-time, Mr. James pursued a master's degree in geology at his alma mater, graduating in 1982. This academic achievement facilitated his promotion to project geologist, where he focused on steam drive projects before transitioning into environmental consulting when Chevron exited the geothermal sector.

Throughout his career, Mr. James has been actively involved in industry-related organizations, such as the National Ground Water Association, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and the Geological Society of America Inc., reflecting his commitment to advancing geological sciences and environmental stewardship. He also served as a board member for the Center for Creative Land Recycling, emphasizing his dedication to sustainable development practices. Additionally, Mr. James is involved with civic-minded organizations, including the Litquake Foundation and Page Street Writing Cooperative, showcasing his commitment to fostering creativity and community engagement beyond his environmental work.

The Bay Street and Emery Station Projects in Emeryville won the Phoenix Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognizing the success of these brownfield redevelopments. He is thankful for his long career in the environmental sector and for the chance to remedy some of the environmental damage caused by historic activities.
