Ms. Harris has established herself as a distinguished figure in the field of interior design, currently serving as the CEO and principal designer of Shundra Harris Interiors. With a career spanning over 15 years, she founded her own company in 2007 and has also taken on the role of director-at-large of the American Society of Interior Designers. Ms. Harris' expertise in residential and commercial design is widely recognized and celebrated within the industry.
Prior to her current roles, Ms. Harris was an adjunct professor at Prairie View AandM University, where she shared her knowledge with students. Her journey in the world of interior design included stints as an interior designer at Alexander and Associates, as a design intern in the interiors department at Leo A Daly, and as a design intern in interior design at Jane Page Design Group. Before transitioning into interior design, Ms. Harris worked as a senior software integration and test engineer and project team leader at Nortel Networks. Her ascent to running her own successful interior design business is a testament to her skill and passion.
Ms. Harris' academic background laid a solid foundation for her diverse career path. She first received a Bachelor of Science in computer science and engineering from The University of Texas at Arlington in 1998. When she decided to pursue her new career path, Ms. Harris returned to school and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in interior design from The Art Institutes in 2007. Her transition from engineering to interior design was driven by a passion for creativity and technicality, further demonstrating her belief in hard work and faith as catalysts for success. Ms. Harris also holds numerous meaningful certifications and titles, including fellow of the American Society of Interior Designers, registered interior designer, and certification from the National Council for Interior Design Qualification.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Ms. Harris is deeply involved in civic activities and has received numerous accolades for her contributions. She volunteers at her church, engages in grant writing for The Rise School--which supports children with Down syndrome--speaks about interior design at independent school districts, sponsors high school students, and serves on the Samson Drew Committee on Development. Ms. Harris' dedication to community service is matched by her recognition within her profession, including being named a national education medalist by the American Society of Interior Designers in 2019.
Outside of her career achievements, Ms. Harris leads a fulfilling personal life as the mother of two children. She enjoys reading, spending time with family, and traveling. Recently completing a 100-hour business training course with Goldman Sachs' 10,000 Small Businesses program has prepared Ms. Harris to scale her design business for future success. She plans on incorporating wellness-focused approaches into her residential design work to better serve individuals with specific needs or disabilities. Ms. Harris also plans to return to teaching in a university setting at some point in the future, demonstrating her commitment to uplifting others and sharing her expert insight in her field.
