After earning a Bachelor of Science in physics from the Florida Institute of Technology, Dr. Finch began working as a graduate research assistant in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Driven to teach, she pursued a PhD in atmospheric sciences at the university through which she published the dissertation, "Gravity Wave/Large-scale Flow Interactions: A Comparison of Model Prediction and Observation." Upon completing her PhD, she continued her studies through postdoctoral work at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
In the ensuing years, Dr. Finch joined Western Illinois University, gaining valuable educational expertise as an assistant and associate professor in the Department of Geography. Backed by her vast knowledge, she excels as a professor in Western Illinois University's Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Geographic Information Sciences. Since becoming a professor in 2018, Dr. Finch has taught various classes, including Introduction to Weather and Climate, Synoptic Meteorology One and Two, Dynamic Meteorology One and Two, Severe and Unusual Weather, and Weather Instruments.
Throughout her career, Dr. Finch has leveraged her expertise as an author of several journal and conference publications, including "Issues and Uncertainties Affecting Metrics for Aviation Impacts on Climate," and "A Report of Findings and Recommendations: Workshop on the Impacts of Aviation on Climate Change." Dr. Finch has also co-authored two textbooks, "McKnight's Physical Geography: A Landscape Appreciation," and "The Atmosphere: An Introduction to Meteorology." Dr. Finch furthered her dedication to education as the editor for the National Association of Geoscience Teachers "In The Trenches." Due to her vast breadth of knowledge, Dr. Finch has also received thousands of dollars in grant funds through Western Illinois University, the National Science Foundation, and The Boeing Company to conduct her research.
Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Finch aligns herself with the National Association of Geoscience Teachers, the American Meteorological Society, and the Illinois and National Science Teachers Associations. Dedicated to her community, she also contributes to her community as a volunteer with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, numerous local schools, and Western Illinois University. Given her outstanding educational and meteorological achievements, Dr. Finch has been honored many times, earning a Best Teaching Assistant Award, inclusion into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and six Professional Achievement Awards through Western Illinois University.
While her career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Finch takes the most pride in co-authoring two textbooks and editing a science education magazine. Though hard work and dedication have brought her far in her career, she credits her success to her mother and grandfather, who were very influential. Within the coming years, Dr. Finch intends to experience her career's continued growth and success.
