As the president and co-founder of the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence since 2015, she has led efforts to assist local, state, national, and sometimes international groups organizing to respond to violence. Ms. Tucker's important work primarily focuses on prevention and intervention strategies to address these critical issues more effectively. She also serves on her nonprofit organization's board of directors. Before serving in her current role as president, Ms. Tucker acted as her organization's executive director from 1998 to 2015.
In addition to her leadership positions at the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence, Ms. Tucker has contributed her expertise as a domestic violence specialist at Child Protective Services within the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services in Austin, Texas, since 2015. Her role involves developing and implementing strategies to protect children from domestic violence situations. Adding to her professional prowess, Ms. Tucker became an adjunct faculty member at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, in 2018.
Drawing on over five decades of experience in this sector, Ms. Tucker began as a volunteer, helping establish the first rape crisis center in Texas in 1974. She also served as the assistant director of the Austin Rape Crisis Center before co-founding and serving as the executive director of the Austin Center for Battered Women, the first of its kind in Texas between 1977 and 1982. The two centers notably merged in 1997, becoming known as SafePlace. In 1982, Ms. Tucker became the first executive director of the Texas Council on Family Violence, a role she maintained for over a decade before co-founding her consulting firm, Tucker, Buel, and Associates, in 1996 with colleague Sarah Buel, JD, to provide consultation and training to end violence against women. Ms. Tucker and Ms. Buel subsequently co-founded the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence two decades later.
Ms. Tucker's consulting, training, and advocacy expertise is nationally recognized. Among many other accomplishments, she was invited by then-Senator Joe Biden in 1994 to serve among a small group that wrote the original Violence Against Women Act. This landmark legislation has provided essential support to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault across the U.S.
Ms. Tucker has held a Bachelor of Arts in education from the University of Texas at Austin since 1974 and a Master of Public Administration from Texas State University since 1981. These educational achievements gave her a solid foundation for leading change effectively.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Ms. Tucker is actively involved with several civic-minded organizations, such as the National Women's Political Caucus, the National Network to End Domestic Violence, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and Partners of the Americas. She has also been honored to serve as the co-chair of the Department of Defense's task force on domestic violence.
Ms. Tucker's outstanding contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Distinguished Alumna Award from the College of Liberal Arts at Texas State University in 2014, induction into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame by the Texas Governor's Commission for Women in 2014, and the Vivian Miles Lifetime Achievement Award from the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault in 2016. She attributes her success to her sense of humor, perseverance, and ability to strategize with like-minded individuals.
