Initially embarking on his career in the medical field, he thrived as a physician and educator. From 2001 to 2002, he served at the University of Miami at the ranks of assistant professor and faculty physician before HealthPartners welcomed him as a physician through 2003. He concurrently taught as an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota from 2002 to 2003 before progressing to accept a position with the Pulmonary Physicians of South Florida through 2005.
Dr. Carter cites his work as the director of the surgical ICU at the Department of Veterans Affairs from 2005 through 2010 as particularly meaningful. The position provided key opportunities to manage a range of projects within the hospital, and Dr. Carter proudly spearheaded a Rapid Response Team to assist nurses in patient stabilization through a model of coordination and collaboration among hospital personnel. Ultimately, the initiative better resulted in better patient outcomes and reduced stress on the nursing staff.
Through a successful transition into software engineering, Dr. Carter showcased his meticulous work ethic and adaptability. He joined Capital One in the fraud detection division in 2014 before sharing his expertise with Prosper I.T. Consulting as a software developer in 2016. His impact in the software engineering context was secured through a series of appointments with VanderHouwen, Perficiat Software, Apex Systems and U.S. Bank between 2016 and 2021, after which Dr. Carter accepted his current title of senior software engineer with Concora Credit.
In his current position since 2021, Dr. Carter has been instrumental in developing full stack .NET applications, demonstrating proficiency in a wide range of programming languages and database design. A deep passion for creating readable, maintainable and testable code has significantly contributed to his success in this prestigious field, as has his persistence in continuous learning, which has driven Dr. Carter to complete training in Linux Shell Scripting, JavaScript and Java 8 and Microsoft Azure, and he earned the Microsoft Certified Professional designation from Microsoft in 2017.
Dr. Carter's journey through both medicine and the technology sector is underpinned by a solid educational foundation. He enrolled at the University of Washington at the age of 14 to pursue French studies, after which he transferred to Lewis and Clark College and earned a dual Bachelor of Arts in French and natural sciences. Dr. Carter graduated cum laude with a Doctor of Medicine from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1995 and subsequently completed a residency at Mayo Clinic. Notably, Dr. Carter was recognized as a pulmonary critical care fellow by the University of Minnesota, and to advance his technical skills, he later pursued computer software engineering coursework at The Tech Academy in 2016, indicating a commitment to continuous learning.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Carter leads a fulfilling personal life marked by a range of activities including renovating houses, biking, skiing and flying as an instrument-rated private pilot. He is also a devoted father to one son.
