Dr. Hawk is a distinguished figure in the field of corporate rehabilitation and environmental advocacy. As the director of the Center for Corporate Rehabilitation since 2005, he has dedicated two decades to transforming business practices to those that can be responsible for showing care to society and the natural context on which it depends. His investment in the Center was in support of innovative practices to avoid and/or soften the now unavoidable consequences of emerging climate change. Some of these are found in his book, "Too Early, Too Late, Now What?" as written in 1979 then republished in 2019. The situation of climate change had become more threatening by 2023 when he wrote and published "Humans are F***ed." That work underscores the necessity of shifting from "business as usual" to "business as unusual," that involves creative resilience.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Hawk served as chief executive officer of the Foundation of the Eternal Feminine from 2016 to 2019. During this period, he focused on empowering the feminine and promoting improved gender relations within corporate structures. His leadership included a position as senior advisor to China Construction America Inc from 2004 to 2019 which helped the mother company, China State Construction, to grow from $30 billion/year to $200 billion/year via international work. Simultaneously he served as professor and dean in the Schools of Architecture and Management at the New Jersey Institute of Technology from 1981-2010. During this public university tenure, he fostered a generation of architects and managers with awareness of climate change consequences becoming part of their future.
His influence was also felt in academia as a dean and a professor at the Schools of Architecture and Management at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. With them from 1981 to 2013 he offered unique research development and teaching thus fostered a generation of architects and managers focused on seeking more sustainable practices in their work.
Dr. Hawk's academic journey began with a bachelor's degree in engineering from Iowa State University in 1971. He later added a Master of Architecture and a Master of City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. His passion for understanding human to nature relations then led him to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in system science and international business at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Graduating in 1979, his doctoral research took place in Sweden where he co-founded the Institute of International Business at the Stockholm School of Economics. His research came to focus on industrial practices that led to environmental deterioration in many nations.
In addition, Dr. Hawk served as an assistant professor at Iowa State University, a visiting lecturer at Tsinghua University from 2004 to 2012, and visiting professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University, Helsinki University of Technology, and other schools. His early career included serving as an architect on the Munich Olympiad design then as a planning officer for the City of Westminster from 1971 to 1972. Throughout his career, Dr. Hawk has been recognized for his contributions, notably being named International Professor of the Year by IBM in 2004.
Dr. Hawk's civic involvement includes serving as a commission member and testifier for the Organization for Net Neutrality and as executive director of the Eternal Feminine Foundation. He is also affiliated with the National Research Council of the National Academies and is a member of the World Financial Council. His publications reflect his deep engagement with systemic change and climate issues, including works such as "Negotiated Order and Network Form Organizations" in 2005 and "Changelessness and Other Impediments to Systems Change" in 1999.
Born in Iowa, Dr. Hawk's early life on a farm instilled in him a profound concern for human-nature relations — a concern further shaped by his experiences during his military service in Vietnam. This lifelong commitment has driven his professional endeavors and advocacy for environmental sustainability. Outside his professional life, Dr. Hawk is a father to three daughters, balancing his career achievements with family responsibilities while continuing to inspire change through his work and writing.
