Dr. Liu is a distinguished expert in battery technology, currently serving as Vice President for core-technology R&D at SES AI Corporation. Before his current position, Dr. Liu served as the Senior Director and Director of Electrolytes at SES AI Corporation from 2020 to 2024, where he led a high-performing research and development team in their efforts to achieve substantial deliverables and requirement-oriented tasks. He was also a Senior Scientist between 2019 and 2020, where he was involved in research and development for Li metal battery electrolyte technology and established a new research direction. Throughout his tenure with SES AI Corporation, Dr. Liu's efforts led to productive collaborations with multiple OEMs, leveraging their expertise in central processing units to accelerate material discovery for various battery applications. He also established partnerships with major equipment manufacturers like Honda, Hyundai Motor, BMW, and General Motors. Under Dr. Liu's extraordinary contribution to advancing core technology, the company obtained a several hundred million dollar investment, and SES went public and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in February 2022.
Before joining SES AI Corporation, Dr. Liu was a Staff Scientist II and postdoctoral researcher at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy from 2014 to 2019.
Dr. Liu's academic journey culminated with a Doctor of Philosophy from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2014. In addition to his educational accomplishments, he is an active member of industry-related organizations, such as the American Chemical Society and the Materials Research Society. Dr. Liu's dedication extends beyond his work-related initiatives, such as volunteering for a youth soccer team, demonstrating his commitment to community engagement.
Throughout his career, Dr. Liu has been awarded more than 20 patents for his innovative work on electrolytes and batteries. As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Liu has contributed extensively to scientific literature with over two invited book chapters and more than 60 papers in prestigious international journals (Nature Nanotechnol., Joule, Adv. Mater., Nano Today, Adv. Energy Mater., Nano Lett., Adv. Funct. Mater., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.) on battery technology and green energy topics, with total publication citations over 10,800 times and H-index is 47. Within, more than 30 papers have been selected as ESI Top 1% Highly Cited Papers, and many innovative works have been highlighted by CCTV1; AAAS, USA; Nature Nanotechnology; Nature Photonics; weekly RSC Publishing press pack; and Chemistry World and cover image of journals (Advanced Materials, Advanced Energy Materials, Small, etc).
Dr. Liu also made scientific contributions to the battery technology research community. He currently serves as associate editor of Frontiers in Energy Research journal and guest editor for international journal, as well as an adjudicative reviewer or independent reviewer for over 30 international journals, and organizer of the 258th American Chemical Society (ACS) meeting symposium.
In light of his professional success, Dr. Liu received numerous awards for his contributions to materials science and engineering, including several ELSEVIER Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing, The First-Class Prize of Science and Technology Award for the Year 2017 awarded by Chinese Materials Research Society, FY17 Outstanding Performance Award, Pacific Northwest National Lab, The First-Place Award Winner of Science as Art of 2015 MRS Fall Meeting. Looking ahead, he intends to further develop next-generation batteries that can be used across various applications while focusing on improving battery safety and promoting sustainable energy solutions.
